Thoughts on mossburg MVP ?

^x2 After inspecting and operating the action on a MVP at my LGS, I recoginzed the sloppy bolt and it was very difficult for me to enjoy cycling it. I do like many of the Mossberg's qualities, however a bolt that easily wiggles around while attempting to cycle is not one of them.

Still waiting for a quality bolt action rifle that uses .223 AR mag.'s (or it's own affordable ten round mag.'s), comes standard with a integrated pistol grip stock (no bedding required) and adjustable length of pull/comb, is capable of sub-MOA accuracy (with match ammo.) and is reasonably lightweight (-7lbs. w/o optic) along with a free floating threaded 16"+/- barrel and at a reasonably affordable price ($1,500+/-).

Something like a lightweight Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR) in .223 with a threaded 14"-16" barrel might do the trick, I do recognize that they are double the price of an MVP. The saying you get what you pay for comes to mind.

Cheers D

mine is all those things..... except quality.... it is an MVP... though it was cheaper than $1500

I was very skeptical about the accuracy of this little rifle when I first saw it too. I figured it would be a decent shooter that could do maybe 1 MOA with decent ammo. No way did I think it would outshoot most of my collection. The top photo is my "range" out behind my house... The second photo shows a group that I shot this spring from my benchrest (since it IS a benchrest gun) with just a bipod and no bags.
Take away the .224" diameter of the bullet and it's not much greater than 1/4 inch group. The bullets were 50gr V-Max if memory serves.

My best was a .35" group at 100 yards with Hornady match ammo.

Now I average 1.5" at 100 10 round groups. Fast as I can cycle.

I have zero regrets buying mine. Found a MVP predator with the 18.5 inch threaded barrel. Had to go through IRUNGUNS to get it last year. Put a Bushnell HD 4.5x14 on it. And those scopes, for the money, are VERY impressive. Mags feed perfectly everytime. Bolt does feel sloppy but I polished the receiver edges and wear spots on the bolt. Sloppy feeling but reliable...in a Lee-Enfield kind of way. Mine likes 60 grainers and Varget. No pics, but I did shoot the best group of my life with this rifle. .34" at 100 with 4 shots. I standardised on 4 shot groups for all my hunting and target rifles.
Buy, shoot, enjoy!

I, like others on here, have heard a lot of reports about bolts breaking and needing repair. Is there an upgrade or permanent fix for this or are all the bolts just fragile?

I've been very happy with the accuracy of my 308 MVP Patrol. Nice length for bush work. The sloppy bolt is the only real downside for me but I got used to it. Never had any other problems with mag retention on my rifle. This is not a gun for precision rifle competitions but a fun bush/truck gun that is more than accurate enough for "armed hiking" (hunting).

I could be wrong but IRC the problem was on the .308 which had a welded on bolt handle. The. 223 hasn't had the problem AFAIK.

I thought it was the extractor but I don't known too much abut them. I would love a .223 bolt action that took AR mags but I heard about that and it turned me off a bit.

Just received one in the mail today. Was hoping to take it out tomorrow, but I made an assumption that is not going to allow me. I assumed that since it is chambered in military 5.56... accepts AR mags, that it would come with a picatinny rail. Nope. Weaver system. So now i have to wait for a Picatinny rail to arrive in order to mount my optic.

Lots of people complain about the 'sloppy bolt'. I have a Rem 700 SPS in .223 and find that bolt as sloppy, or sloppier then the mvp I have. I find the action of the MVP smoother then the 700 aswell. I have to load the magazine in to the mag well properly or the first round is harder to load, after the first round is fired and the mag is properly seated it loads fine.

mvp predator owner here, this rifle hits way out of its price class!! Never been let down and outshoots my bad eyes any day!! best investment in a varmint gun under 600$ (when I bought it at least) period! my best group (with my bad eyes) was .6 (rare for me) and my average after two large Timmies jitters :p is still well within 1.5.
I would Not sell this gun!

also ....just for sh*ts and giggles (and because I have a not so great shoulder) I had a Grizzly gun works custom muzzle break made up for it and with .223 it barely moves at all.... literaly you can track your own shots, recoil is non existant too (I am talking less than my beeman pellet rifle).. just don't ask about the volume now :p

My 556 rifle has a problem with the bolt. I have had it out to the range twice and after 20 rounds or so it starts to fail to fire. I pull the trigger and the hammer fails to release. It 'clicks' but doesn't move forward to strike the pin. Once the guns cools off it begins to function again.

Really frustrating. I probably will have to try and contact Mossberg for a replacement and from what I hear about their customer support in Canada that's not a good thing.

Truth. I have two magazines that needed to be swapped out, still nothing from grech outdoors. I may need to contact corporate Mossberg, i find that helps with subcontractors and suppliers should work for distributors too.

That's too bad. I really want to like this rifle. It fills a niche for me as I have a ton of AR mags and my only non restricted .223 isn't very accurate. I would love a simple bolt action .223 for the girlfriend to try hunting coyotes with and she doesn't like black, plastic, tacticool rifles.

To be fair, I had an MVP Patrol with the 16" barrel and it worked perfectly. I traded if for a NIB Varmint and I am having problems with this bolt.

Not a fan of Mossberg anything ......

Last week I handled one of the MVP's. The bolt is a bit sloppy but it's not that bad. The rifle seemed ok, I've seen worse. The accuracy reviews are impressive though for what it is so can't be that bad.

I have the Mossberg MVP patrol 308, I put a MDT LSS chassis on it and I like it a lot, I can shoot it MOA consistently and i'm only a fair shot on most days and a good shot on the best days. Are there better rifles out there ? Sure there are no question, But for being under $700 it is a very nice gun for the price. It uses AR magazines so you can use the 10 round pistol ones and you can change to a full 10 round mag in seconds not many bolt rifles can do that ! You could use 30 or even 40 round pmags if you wanted lol It has a threaded barrel so you can put on a muzzle device if you want, It has a 16.5" barrel making it a good small truck/quad hunting rifle which is one of my main reasons for picking it and with the LSS chassis you can use a AR buttstock even a folding one so it carries and stores easy being short, The iron sights it comes with are decent and there if you need them. As for the "sloppy" bolt that is how it has to be to feed from all the different magazines it can use I believe is the reason for that. I push the bolt in it feeds a round from the magazine and when you pull it back it ejects it 100% of the time.

Take it for what it is
A reasonably priced short, easy to carry bolt action AR style black rifle that is more accurate then your average AR but uses the same mags as an AR giving you more firepower then your average bolt gun. It's a tactical rifle not a bench resting paper puncher. I am more then happy with my choice of the Mossberg MVP Patrol its a good gun for what it was intended to be used for.
