Deer fat..what to do?

So I'm butchering my deer today and it has huge slabs of fat on it. Can I use it to feed birds during the winter...like suet?
 
Excellent use. If the fat is white in the early season....not that big a deal, when it is yellow in the rut or post rut...that is the source for "gamey" taste. Get as much out as you can, the fat, blueskin, tenons.

Put the fat in onion bags and hang it on the garage or out the window you most look out. The birds will go wild. Anything resembling meat but to nasty or blood shot for the grinder makes a excellent add to a dogs kibbles. Boil it up in a stock pot and add just a little to the kibbles. Shiny ...healthy coats.
 
If the fat is white I mix it in with the grind. Deer fat (or any game fat) that is white is not gamey or unpleasant to eat. If I hear one more "tallow" comment about deer fat ruining meat I will just bust. Of course yellow fat or the pink blue fat on a rutting buck (post rut) is a little nasty. You can also feed it to the birds but true suet is the fat from around the internal organs. Most birds prefer that over hard fat.

we leave the fat and rough trimmings and hide on the floor of the attached, the weasels move in and enjoy, the mice move out and we enjoy! The bones and total scrap go for yote bait. My best Pals get the deluxe trimmings. Never thought of the birds. I will bag up some fat and hang them in the trees out front.

My intention exactly. Old onion bags, and deer fat....want to see what it attracts...I assume squirrels will abstain????
 
I keep all the deer scrap's in boxes in the shed and put it in the bird feeder as needed. It is a large feeder and I put parts of the rib cage in, everything eventually. Pour sunflower seeds in amongst it and the birds love it. I haven't got one complaint from the bird advocate to date.
 
I use it for birdfeeders...not just the fat from my own deer, but I am happy to take any extra that the meatcutter has, and he's usually happy to give it away.

I just built a new suetfeeder last week: 9 inches wide, 2 inches deep, 30 inches tall. That makes a total of 7 suet feeders around my yard, and they attract several species of woodpeckers (including Pileateds on the big feeder...Pileated Woodpeckers are the size of crows and very impressive), nuthatches, chickadees, blue jays and magpies. Fill'em up after deer season, and they're usually completely empty by the end of the winter.
 
I have two pails I use for deer fat.... Someone mentioned how to do it in another thread I can't find..... I render my fat in the Dutch oven I use over the campfire and then place a bent coat hanger in each pail (bent so a portion lies flat on the bottom of each pail), then Pail one gets a bunch of cheap birdseed and pail two Gets a months worth of meat scraps.... I pour the rendered fat into each pail and stir and allow to freeze outside..... When frozen, I bring the in to the house to thaw the outsides of the pail..... I then pull out the contents using the Hangers and have two blocks.... One being a giant suet block for the cardinals, chickadees bluejays and woodpeckers..... The other for my favourite yote spot as bait....

Putting any of that ####e back in the meat is just gross....
 
I grind it, render it, strain/filter out all the solids, and then use it to make cold process soap. It is fantastic.

We leave the fat on, deer chops with the fat on is great as are lamb chops. The trick is to not over cook them...2 minutes, 2minutes, 1 minute, 1minute is just about right for a 1 to 1 1/4 inch thick chop. :)

The other trick is to not shoot a mature buck during the peak of the rut!
