Out tonight on a deer hunt taking a new hunter for his first deer. The land owner has given me orders to blast every yote I see as he has been having problems with them. So sure enough one shows up about 150 yards from the blind bing bang boom one less coyote to bother his livestock.

I will be going back out there for the winter to try and pick off a few more so I wouldn't mind skinning a couple for some decorative hides for the wall. Now the one I took tonight was with my 7 08 and a 140 gr ballistic tip so at least one side of the hide was nice.

I am putting together a new 22 250 that was intended for this purpose and was wondering what bullets you have been using to get a clean kill with minimal hide damage. Right now I have a supply of 50 gr vmax bullets on hand but is there a better option for this task.

I've had good luck with Winchester white box 45 grain JHP. Depending on your shot placement there shouldn't be an exit....just an itty bitty entry hole. I'm sure there are guys on here with a lot more experience than me that will point you in the right direction. Just my two cents. Good luck!
 
I shoot the Sierra 52gr. Match BTHP in my .22-250 (and did in a .223 WSSM as similar velocity) and have had excellent results - pin prick entry, no exit and severe bloodshot/jelly-fied innards. Only whacked 3 so far but results have been the same at 30-120 yards.

Coincidentally, I shot a 'yote in deer season with my 7mm-08 and 140 Ballistic Tips as well - quite an exit hole on a 20 yard broadside shot. LOL Have you bagged any deer with that load yet? I haven't and am curious about bullet performance from a first hand account. Only after I settled on this load did I read some mixed reports on the 140 BT's being a bit too fragile for deer and possibly hard on meat.(?)
 
my 22-250 fur load is 50 gr vmax with 38gr of h380. keep shots behind the shoulders and you should be good. i find close shots and small dogs i sometimes get a small exit about the size of a loonie.

I have taken two deer with that load. First was a bang two steps flop. Rear quartering shot at about 120 yards. No exit but the heart was pudding. Second was an 80 yard broadside shot. Again no exit but the animal went about 50 or so paces into the thick stuff before it tipped. Found the bullet in both and both had shed the core. Good load for whitetail boiler room shots but for hard work I use partitions.
 
I have shot quite a few with my 7mm-08 with Swift Scirocco II's.

Seriously , that bullet is amazing.Holds together and thumps everything.

Looks like they have a 62 and 75 grain projectile for your 22-250.Also with good BC and a very accurate projectile.

This is my do everything bullet.
 
I'd try a slightly lighter vmax bullet if you want to save the hide. The most accurate is still the best. If you punch to big a hole on the other side just put a picture of the coyote with the rifle into it. Might not be classy but it'll sure add character
 
I shoot 55g vmax out of my .22-250. If I hit the coyote low or high and there is going to be a big exit hole. If I hit dead mass I usually don't get an exit. Straight on shots center of chest I have never had an exit or a coyote take more than one step. Even at 20 yards or less.
 
got one last year while i was turning my truck around to zero in my scope with my most accurate load. he was laying down on a hill at the 300 yard mark and i was at the 100. smoked him broadside quartering away with the 75 grain v-max out of my 25-06 four legs standing straight up in the air for 5 seconds then slowly tipped over haha. very small exit hole. that v-max did a good job. looks like those 50 grain v-max should get up to 3800 fps. my 25-06 75 grain should have been at 3600 mv
 
I've been using 110gr bergers in my 270 on yotes. Seem to be able to reach out and touch them with minimal hide damage.

Poor advice.... Firstly, it's illegal to hunt with FMJ...... Secondly, would you hunt deer with an FMJ if you could?..... Just because a coyote is a varmint, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve a quick and ethical kill....

Next time try actually don't something before offering advice on the internet telling others to do it.....
 
Definitely don't agree with a FMJ, way to much risk of ricochet. Heard a real bad story from someone using FMJ one winter. They were hunting a frozen creek and shot a coyote (or at a coyote...don't remember for sure) the long and the short of it was the FMJ rounds took a weird path and ended up curving through the ice. They heard the round whistle off and found the bullet paths through the ice.....scary stuff....errant rounds flying through the air. I'll stick with lighter rounds that will disintegrate when they hit an obstruction.

here in Ontario unless the regs changed since I last check say nothing about expanding bullets needed for hunting anything. I have shot coyotes with .22lr as well while hunting other things they expired no problem
 
Fmj is legal in Ontario. It's a bad choice for the farmland and small wood lots between windsor and Woodstock. They bounce and are very unpredictable.
A varmint bullet light for caliber at high speed works perfectly and is much safer
