Effed up my sks front sight tonight....

The problem with the front sight is that it sat in a crate for 6 decades and seized up tight. Sight tool or otherwise, these front sights need to be soaked with penetrating oil and tapped back and forth with a flat punch to get them to move, BEFORE you go to the range or attempt the use of a front sight tool.

I've watched several people break their adjustment tool. On a new rifle I oil the hell out of my sights and keep tapping the lug until it moves easily. If you are persistent with this, you don't even need the sight tool. The lug will tap over easily with anything like the side of a pair of pliers and a quarter inch bolt in the field.

I see you are local, if you drop by the store we will pull the messed up bayo lug for you for free. We also have factory bayo sleeve/sight replacements to get you back on track.

Hold on now... before you go in there and Dremel it out, why don't you get yourself one of them Solder-It butane mini-torches and heat up the sight post and the area around it, then try breaking it free? To improve your chances even more, you should use the butane torch along with a penetrating oil designed to work with heat, such as "Deep Creep".

This is an old trick used by automotive mechanics, which I have used many times myself on stubborn, seized or rusted out bolts on our family cars/trucks. Sometimes you need to heat up a bolt till it's red hot, but it always ends up giving... of course that's provided that your sight post is actually seized and not retained by some sort of mechanical means (pin, severe deformation, etc).

Good luck, fellow SKS'er! :)

Get the tool - file it and report OP!!!!! Or get out the blow torch, percussion hammer, piledriver, or sledge hammer and post some pics.

Ok so i think it's definately new front sight assembly time. I took a whack at it yesterday. Dremeled down the sight post, got it completely flush. Tried to whack it out. It would go about halfway then stop. Tried it the other way. Same deal. So i stuck it in the bench vice, and *crack* out it came. Look at the hole that the windage barrel comes out of, and there's a chunk cracked out the bottom. Turns out that the sight post was threaded in far enough to stick out the bottom.

I'm tempted just to get a new gun. This WAS a good shooter though.... I might take a shot at putting on the ak style front sight assembly.

You should be able to find a whole new sight/bayonet assembly on the ee, or locally at lever or from hical. Pull the old sleeve and replace with a new one, hell pick up another sks and crate of ammo while you're at it. That's a good enough excuse as any to buy another gun.

True enough! Wonder if 60 year old russian milsurps ever go on sale. Or instead of a cheap shooter, maybe i could get something special. Any suggestions?

From what I hear, they go on sale regularly at this time of year $170 or even $169 for a refurb. Or you could treat yourself to a very nice unissued, non-refurb from Weimajack for $260 and then you will appreciate it more and buy non-corrosive and get smaller groups.

Bushbum, I just happen to have a complete front sight. You have more need of it than I do. Address?

Much obliged RW! I think i'll take you up on that. Just goes to show you that gun people are good people.
Are there any little bits and pieces you're looking for? I happen to have close to 100 pcs of once fired 30-06 brass i'm never gonna use. If that doesn't work and you can think of something else, run it by me, i'll see what i have.
