I am in the market for a new hunting rifle. I want to try something else cartridge wise and I am looking for input. I have the deer/ antelope sized game cased so looking more at the moose/elk range with maybe bear one day. Not a big fan of recoil more of a quality bullet with good shot placement type of fellow. Open to all thoughts and suggestions.

I have owned or own the following
.223 Rem
5.56x45 Nato
.22-250 Rem
.220 Swift AI
.243 Win
.25-06 Rem
6.5 Creedmoor
.260 Rem
.270 Win
.270 WSM
.308 Win
.30-06 SPRG
.300 Win Mag
8x57mm Mauser

Holy cow just realized I have never owned a 7mm. Probaby should look that direction to round it out :d The 338-06 has always intrigued me aswell.
 
for the upper end how about a 338 06 or 35 whelen. easy on the shoulder and packs a good sized bullet. very effective rounds from dear to moose or bear.
 
We'll knowing what you actually have right now helps to better suggest what could kill elk/moose more effectively. You won't kill anything with a chamfering you no longer own. I think you're on a good mindset seeing you've never owned a 7mm. A classic 7mm RM would satisfy both needs. A 280 AI would also do nicely
 
That .300 WinMag will handle any animal on this continent and then some,,,, if you still have it, of course. Moose, Grizzly, black bear, elk, deer, you name it, big or small it will do them all ! ! !
The same could be said for the .30-06 as well as the ,338 WinMag.
Recoil is something that you will have to learn to handle. Don't shoot big guns with a death grip and a total locked body position, learn to give with the recoil, do not resist it. Get a rifle that fits you good with the stock and as soon as you get it sighted in, get off the bench ! ! !
 
OP, I see you haven't tried the 7x57 nor the 7mm-08. They might just be what you are asking for, hard hitters and no recoil. I'm going with a new to me one, too. .284 Win. Not sure what it does on moose, someone else with experience will likely chime in. I won't be going moose hunting, anyway!
