Don't know what model it is. Smith and wesson in 38 S&W Special cartridge. Ribbed barrel and target sights. Trigger shoe installed Excellent mechanical condition and nice finish. All advice appreciated

The model number should be on the frame--open up the cylinder and have a look to see what's engraved there. It's probably a .38 Special, too, not .38S&W. The barrel looks like it says ".38 S&W Special"

It looks to me to be a K Frame...maybe a Model 14? If it is I'm guessing it'd probably be worth $400-$500...maybe a bit more.

What you have is a five-screw K-38 Masterpiece. Compared with a newer three-screw gun, it has an extra screw on top of the sideplate and another one in front of the trigger guard that retains the cylinder stop plunger spring.
When S&W introduced model numbers in 1957, it became the Model 14. The top sideplate screw was omitted circa 1955 and the cylinder stop screw was omitted circa 1961. The "fish hook" hammer is often found in early postwar guns.

I would estimate the value at around $700. With original grips, it would be worth more.

Nice! i have a 1957 K-38 that is one of my favourite revolvers. I'd guess $600-700 as is, at least $100 more if you had the original magna grips.

I have a copy of the Standard catalog of Smith and Wesson. If you post the first few of the serial number I can give you the year.
