Hello, i had owned and shot a gen1 Glock 17 back in the 90's and like it a lot more than Beretta 92.
Never shoot M&P yet, currently shooting a 1911 and S&W revolver for IDPA and Speed Steel.
Want to pick up a second 9mm and would like to get some input on the M&P9 vs Glock 17 gen4 comparison.(trigger pull, recoil, feel in the hand,reliability...etc)
Thank you in advance

They're both great guns, that operate in a very similar fashion. The ergonomics are very different, with the M&P having a "softer" feel. You really need to handle both and see what feels better for you. You can't go wrong with either.

The only thing that the M&P has going for it is the ergonomics. Everything else is better on the Glock including parts availability. Try finding parts for the M&P, only Brownell's ships S&W parts to Canada and they only carry the old Gen 1 M&P parts. Try and find a Gen 3 slide stop or "H" marked trigger bar. And for S&W warranty, I don't even want to go there.

i have both and prefer the 'shooting' feel of the Glock over the M&P, whereas if i just hold them both in my hand the M&P feels better. Funny that, and I am more accurate with the Glock as well, my two cents. However, if you want a super accurate 9mm with a 1911 feel, get a CZ SP01 Shadowline, i love mine and it is my favourite semi handgun.

CZ SP01 Shadowline can't be beat!

Hard to find, but I know just the place that has one, at a great deal!

While I would agree with this, the M&P fits small hands much better (at least my small hands). Triggers are quite different, too. The Glock trigger is better out of the box but the M&P can be upgraded with the Apex kit to better than most anything the Glock can offer, period.

I thought s&w has one of the best warranties around, lifetime. No matter who owns it.

The warranty is fine, it is who deals with it in Canada that is the problem.

Same here fox..

I own a Shadow, G20 and an M&P40. The Shadow gets the most attention and the S&W gets the least. If the 10 mm wasn't so expensive to shoot, it would be even with the CZ for sure.

M&P trigger has me turned off..

They're both pretty good choices with a few issues.

The Glock will need sights immediately and you may want to look at the extraction/ejection cycle.

The M&P will need a trigger immediately and you may want to look at the accuracy, particularly in 9mm.

Most owners will not notice anything wrong with either one. Most shooters will want to address the immediate problems. Few will be bothered by the remaining issues.

Personally I think I own no M&Ps. I have six or eight glocks and I find them effective. I would very much like to see what happens with the S&W/GenDyn collaboration, though.

As you can see OP, there is no agreement here. It's like comparing Coke and Pepsi, Ford and Chev...
There are many excellent polymer striker fired guns out there now since your Gen 1 Glock. The best thing to do is to try out the guns listed above before purchasing one.
Someone mentioned the Walther PPQ. I would definitely add that to your list. For around the same price as the Glock gen4, it's an excellent gun.
For my $0.05, I'm a Glock guy! But if the S&W MP9 were around 25 yrs ago, I might have been a S&W guy, know what I mean?
