Took my Mosin to the range for another go at finding out it's group size at 300 meters. This time I went equipped with a
recoil pad and 35 rounds of ammo so I was expecting to get an answer this time. I also shot my faithful old 1950 re-furb
SKS at side by side targets in order to have a control sample of wind influence or operator malfunction. Both, IRON SIGHTS.
I shot one group each of 5 at 50m and then two groups each at the other distances to provide verification.

Mosin Group size..................... Sks Group size
50m ....2inches..........................3inches
100m....4inches..........................5inches
200m...10inches........................12inches
300m.. 30inches? hard to tell.......20inches

So, something is happening with the Mosin at 300meters but it is hard to tell because of running out of target paper to judge by.
Any ideas or reccomendations?

Buy one of those Limbsaver over the shoulder recoil pads ( 1 pad many guns ) my guess is the front sight is too wide. Or you need a bigger target with a better ref point.

At 300m you're testing the sights, target selection, and your own talent more than the rifle. I'd work on the group at 100m. A good 91/30 will easily put 5 shots in 2 inches at that distance shooting on a sandbag. If it won't do any better than 4 inches you can experiment with Finn style shims but not all rifles respond to that treatment.

x2!!!

You only brought 35 rounds?

Have you done any work to shim or bed the rifle in? I find my 42 mosin is pretty good off of bags, 80-100yrds I'm shooting 1.5x2.5" 5 shot groups. 100yrds is my max at the range, I'd love to stretch out to 300.

Yep! 35 rounds is all I wanted to put up with that thumping! The recoil pad took the sharp edges of the stock away from my shoulder but that
thumping still shakes me up. Maybe I was flinching during the last set of shots, I will have to see what I can do about that.

No! I have not done anything to improve or adjust this Mosin or even just make sure that I am giving it a fair shake, I will work on that also.

RobertMcC is right, I need to set up a bigger target sheet so that I find out where those shots are ending up. Thanks to all for the advice.

I been using the back side of wrapping paper as bigger target sheet, Or brown paper from the dollar store. Seriously get this.

Last time I went to the range it was -4 I had a light sweater, I put this over, and had my flannel jacket and I shot 60rds of 182grn heavy ball and came home not a broken blood vessel, no sore shoulder, never got caught in the collar bone. And my shooter only got over a 18" barrel so it hits... But I never felt a thing. And I didnt get a flinch. Where without I was done around 30rds and bruised.

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment lol.

I put a rubber butt pad on mine but have yet to get out and see how much it reduces felt recoil. I find my Enfield is worse in that dept but I'm getting used to it each outing. Iirc the last outing my 91/30 and svt40 saw I put 150rds through each and was no worse for wear, each time it's been less noticeable. I love my 42, it's seeing way more range time than the my other older hex reciever.

I like to use a slip on recoil pad with my Mosins because I dont only shoot 60 rounds. I'm shooting 140-300 rounds of x54 an outing. Combined with a mix of few hundred 12g buck/birdshot and slugs, recoil can ad up.

^^^Very true.

I've always found a using the sling to pull the butt of the rifle in tight to the shoulder has always helped to manage recoil on my mosins or LE, I made the mistake of buying some 00buck magnum loads by accident once. I was battered and bruised after that lol. Wasn't much fun after the second shell...

Well! I don't know whether to thank you for this video or not! Miculek can shoot a carbine way better standing off-hand than I can shoot
from a benchrest using the 91-30. I did learn a couple of things that I will make use of. 1. Try better ammo. 2. motor vehicle target checking.

I have no doubt that he's one of the best shooters on the planet, but its pretty easy to take some liberties with video. I don't completely buy it.

I could absolutely hit a steel gong of that size every shot at 300m (and have) with a 91/30 or M44 sitting on a bench with sandbags.. standing and shooting off-hand, that's another thing all together. He's an incredible shot and he's fun!

Had another go with the Mosin today, shimmed the barrel at the end of the wood (it was loose and floppy) put to use a couple
other tips in this thread, had the slip on butt pad in place and got a 1" group at 50m! The 300m group is still giving me trouble,
the best I could do was 15" after three, five shot tries. I seem to have developed a definite flinch even though there is absolutely
no pain while using the butt pad. What can be done about that? I have tried to "WILL" it away, but that hasn't worked yet.

On another note: A fellow was shooting a TT33 on the rifle range (getting a 24" groups at 100m) and let me shoot a magazine!
I shot a 6" group at 10m and enjoyed myself thoroughly! But I can't remember focusing on the sights or anything else at all!
I have shot handguns a little but it was always a discouraging experience where I was never able to do very well. Is there
something about the TT33 that makes it easier or is it just a fluke of the day?

Both of my Russian post war TT-33's have excellent triggers. It makes them much easier to shoot them accurately although, they also have a lot of play in them and I suspect mine aren't the most accurate pistols out there. Still, I'm able to shoot them well enough to keep me coming back for more. Watch out! They're very addictive.
