Within a hundred to a hundred and twenty yards. I'd be using a Ruger 77/357 carbine with 18.5 inch barrel..I have a Leupold 3-9x40 scope on the rifle...I hear Buffalo Bore 180 gr. are good and I've also read that Hornady 158 gr. XLT's are also great...Anyone out there with actual experience with this calibre that can give me an opinion...

Speer Gold Dots.....a 158gr Ruko went through 19" of mule deer a couple years back by a friend's .357 carbine......Harold

From what I've read, any 158 grain jacketed bullet without hollow point should do the job. I hope to do the field research myself next season.

Sold a crap load of Hornady's Lever Revolution 357 just prior to the deer season.

So "someone" thinks it's good to use for deer - at it's price point I don't think it was bought for cowboy action shooting :)

What length of barrel are you shooting it out of OP? I was considering picking up a .357 rifle but was unsure if the barrel length would greatly affect it.
