The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

I'm back from the range but only spent 45 minutes as the light was falling this afternoon. At 25m , my rear sight just had to be tweaked about a half turn to the left. Half a turn with the allen key, I mean. Then I was centred at 25m and life is good.

I just made sure I was about 1" low from my POA (point of aim) at 25m. Then I figured I would be close at 100m. I used a 6" bull black sticker from Milcun dot com which works really well for the iron sights. My group at 100m was a tad low. The factory manual recommends that each 180 degree up or down is about 1.25" so a couple of 180 degree turns upwards and I was printing exactly where my post was pointing at. So POA is POI (point of impact). I was merely shooting 3 shot groups. :)

I do have to say shooting with that brake sure gives a funny breeze after each trigger pull. That sure was funny! :cool:

I mic'ed my brass coming out of the chamber. Half the shot brass was 1 thou above the 1.630" SAAMI specification and the other half was dead nuts on the 0 or 1.630" marker. I'm super excited. What a tight chamber from the factory for this hammer forged barrel.

Thanks I tried to use google buy they were all out of stock! The ruger look very nice I bought a 10/22 with the same laminated stock look. It's a shame they don't make more guns with laminated stock.

on a related note i have the Left handed scout just not the threaded one, i got one from the first batch that made it into Canada and i LOVE mine.
take it everywhere when i go out into the bush.
even if its not the gun im using for that hunt its on my quad in case i need it.
 
Okay Gunsite fellows... I must be out of my mind but I cannot figure out how (even with the Torx tool) to remove the buttpad and play with the stock spacers. Am I missing something? That Torx tool was found inside the Ruger factory box, and I just cannot get things to line up and work.

I need some experienced hands here! :)

when i got mine i farted around with the LOP and i just loosened them up and took them off and tried different lengths then once i found the one i liked i just put the screws back in.

had no problems.

dont know what to tell ya, its just 2 bolts in the back.

Mine are #2 phillips, I believe the included driver is meant for the scope rings.....

Weird, mine are Allen screws. Mine came with an Allen wrench as well as the Torx tool. 9/64" I believe.

You are right. I tried a bunch of Allen keys last night. The manual spoke about Allen Key, but no sizes mentioned; so I busted open my Lowes Allen Key set and then tried a bunch but that was after I fired up my LEDLenser 200 lumen weapon light. I discovered that the allen key must have been 1/8" or larger and then chose accordingly from there! And YES, it's a 9/64" drive! :cool:


All sorted out and then removed the spacer that came with the factory (single 1/2" spacer installed already) to obtain a (owner's manual) 12 3/4" LOP for my short arms. I'm 4 foot 18 inches tall.... it's a great size to have when you have worked with armoured vehicles in the Battalion. :)

So now that the season is over and my stop gap measures are no longer necessary, I finally have it in a traditional scout configuration. While I haven't fired it in this configuration, I really like the way it feels and handles.

You get a bigger field of view around the scope but the field of view looking thru the scope is smaller. I'd try the primary arms 1-6x scope for 300$. At 1x (true 1x) you're going to be faster than any scout scope with the reticle used in the primary arms (red illuminated horse shoe with a small precise red illuminated center dot). You also get wind holds and holdover marks... It's a tactical scope you get range estimation mark for a 5'10" man and 18" chest but if it's practical that's all that matter. You can shoot with both eyes open with traditional scope in fact you should shoot with both eye open with anything even iron sight. With my sks I can't get my left eye to focus on the front post thru the rear sight when my right eye is completely open so I just half close my right eye and I still have my peripheral vision. I don't have to do that with a traditional scope or with peep sight I can keep both eyes completely opens.

I shoot with both eyes open all the time, regardless of which sight or optic I'm using. I do, surprisingly like "using" a long eye relief scope so far. I don't plan on taking very long shots with it, so a max 7 power seems adequate for what I'd use it for. It just feels fast and handier now with the pistol scope on it. While the weight wasn't bad with the 3-9x40, after taking the weight off, it is noticible to me.

But scout scopes aren't for everyone.
 
I bought the xs rail.... Gun mounted the cope exactly wher I wanted it.... It's not scout mounted, but it's also not conventional either..... It also (to me) hit the sweet spot to where the weight distribution is perfect....
