Swedish 96 thread pritector ?

I just picked up a protector for the threads at the muzzle on my 96 , and after installing it, I see it does not screw down far enough to mate with the end of the barrel. There is about 1/8" gap on the inside of the thread protector and the end of the barrel . Are these intended to be filed/ground back so they bottom out touching the end of the muzzle and the step on the barrel at the same time so there isn't a space at either end of the protector ?
As it is I am afraid that it would be blown off the end of the barrel.

Sounds like you have one of the aftermarket products that were brought in by SARCO about ten years ago. Is it also a flash hider?? I order a dozen from them and had to modify all of them to fit properly.

Someone here with more knowledge than I have can fill you in on what I believe were the original protectors that came with some of the rifles. The protectors that came with them were tight fitting white nylon that were slip fit.
 
The theading on the barrel was for a blank firing device that the shooter, when firing rounds with wooden bullets , shredded the bullet when fired. I personably bought the flash hider version to thread on my rifles and they all fit pretty good. The last one I bought from Tradex
 
Trade-Ex also sells a Swedish Mauser thread protector which the OP has and yes they come a little bit long as some Swedish Mauser's had their muzzle threading cut longer than others and all you need do is file down the difference if it matters to you otherwise leave as is and the bullet will not hit it as the hole is slightly larger than the bore and bullet.
 
The Swedes had a plastic "ring" that was slipped over the threads to protect them. Easily made -----just find the proper inside diameter tubing (a bit undersized) and thread it on after you cut it to length.

Yeah, that what they used but the blued end cap sold by Trade-Ex looks way better and is easy to remove if needed to bring back to original.

I did file it down to better fit. My thoughts were that if left long there would be a good chance of the escaping gas to blow it off the barrel if left long. Also it seemed to be a great dirt trap if left long.
