Hi,

I'm trying to compare the m&p 9mm range/carry and pro and going between the 4.25 and the 5 inch barrel. The 5 gives that little bit longer sight radius, but is it really that noticeable? I am looking at the range/carry with the addition of the apex trigger, and comparing against the pro 5inch. The pro has the longer barrel, better sights and better stock trigger. But the 4.25 range/carry kit comes with all the extras and with the addition of the apex trigger is similar in price to the stock pro with no extras.
Any thoughts on if the 5 inch pro will really be cost effective as compared to the range/carry with the addition of an apex trigger?
The range/carry is easy to find, the pro has to be special ordered in and 1 of the 3 distributors in Ontario is already out of stock.
Thanks

I have the 5 inch Pro Core. Love it. Less recoil better sights and hell of a lot better trigger.

if you shoot ipsc production then its perfect.

The only thing you would be missing is a holster. and in all honesty that holster sucks.

+1. I tried a 1911 and CZ P07 and P09 and I find pro core a better feel personally. For holster I ended up using a Glock holster and had to do a bit bending to make it work.

I have both. Both triggers were crappy. Apex trigger is a must with RAM.

Accuracy wise they are both accurate. But the pro core does cycle a little faster. Don't worry about hosted options you can use a regular M&P hoster for both. But can't use a pro core one for the regular M&P since the slide is on Pro Core is slimmer. They pro core does have a better sear but again you won't notice the difference.

Pro core does have a higher twist rate on the barrel and the finish is more of a Matt finish which is not as good for wear resistance.

More importantly with a Core you can easily mount a red dot on it down the road which make things more fun!

This is the same length difference as a standard 1911 versus the commander length. I found that difference very noticeable in how the gun shot. I haven't shot an M&P Pro, but I expect it will be just as noticeable there as with the 1911 design. Whether that matters enough to you, I can't say.

tagged for interest.

I've been mulling over a CORE in 4.25 vs 5 for months. House is finally sold - no more renos - debt repayment in full swing.

I will have one of these puppies someday - gotta narrow this decision down before then.

I like the looks of the 4.25 especially when it's got a tac light on that sticks out past the muzzle (something so mean looking about that!) but I'm told the recoil is more manageable on the 5inch (accuracy better too)

Ahhh - this keeps me up at night lol

First M&P was the standard 4.25; bought it used. Shot it a LOT. Changed the trigger and sights (adjustable). Excellent pistol. Then I bought a 5" Pro. The longer sight radius does make a difference. Trigger and adjustable sights one this one, too. Won the Last One Standing Match at NSCC at Connaught with it. Have shot this one a LOT as well. The 4.25 is a good gun, but I can shoot better with the Pro. Decided to go with an optic, bought a 5" CORE, DeltaPoint sight. Haven't had it long enough to be really comfortable with the optic yet.
I get a kick out of folks asking how many rounds have been put through a pistol that is for sale. My Smiths are sound, competitive pistols, ready to go. But they are "experienced", thousands of rounds through them.

4.25 for me. I have not used the 5" but then again i am using rmr

I've got the PC Ported with CORE 5" in 40S&W and it's an excellent shooter. It's one of my favorite pistols....

If you are going optic then the longer barrel isn't necessary.

I own several M&P's. They are not target pistols but shoot better than I can hold for sure. I really don't notice any practical difference in accuracy playing IDPA using a 5" vs a 4.25" gun. Having said that when I use my M&P now I use the Pro 5" with a new 1 - 10 twist barrel. For practice and when I run courses I go with the 4.25". This year I am spending more time with my CZ 75 Shadowline. Got one so I might as well use it.

Take Care

Bob
