Hi all, I was wondering if it is possible to do a little bit of modification to a standard SKS to allow it have the geometry accept an AR magazine, and a smart little device to hold it in place. It will need to be able to use stripper clips. Any suggestions?

I don't want to pay for the adapters lol

Why not just stay with the original mag? It seems to do everything you want and it costs nothing ...

I am not trying to be flippant, but given your requirements why bother trying to add a XCR mag that is fixed in place when the original one is foolproof?

I suppose you want the 10 round capacity, but it seems hardly worth the trouble without the detachable feature.

Actually I think 10 round capacity is very ideal, if only there was a way to do so in a simple way.

Exactly right, that is the issue ... take a look at the required mods if you haven't already.

Even if the adaptor was free ( amd no I am not offering, LOL), I expect all of the mods would still be needed and that represents a substantial investment in your time.

Then something needs to be engineered to set the magazine at the proper angle and that is the job the adaptor does. I do not expect you can get it much cheaper by going with a "fixed mag" version. I am trying to imagine what part of the adaptor price is dedicated to the removable mag feature, and I think it is little or nothing.

I guess you could eliminate the mag release, but that's not a huge savings, maybe $5 ....

With the amount of effort you're going to put into the project, you're better off buying the kit. If you want to do it yourself, at least make the mag removable. Otherwise you're regressing a design for no reason. Welding the mag in place won't exempt it from future possible bans and the RCMP may even construe welding as altering the magazine, thus makimg it prohibited. We already know they'll stretch their interpretations pretty far to reach their goals so this wouldn't be totally unlikely.

I am no law guru but I have to agree with H Wally. Once the mag is permenant you have mod. it. Which is a big nono. That is why MagWedge had to fix the adapter from the fellow down south. NO TOUCHY THE MAG LOL. Unless you did somekind of set-screw system to hold it in just the right spot. Well happy playing and safe shooting any new toy from santa this year guys and gals.

We had this discussion way back when we were designing the adapter a few years back. I think the opinion was once the mag becomes permanent part of the firearm, it is no longer a pistol magazine but part of the centerfire semi auto rifle and as such must be pinned to 5 rounds.

I could rig an SKS up like that with a bunch of JB Weld, my dremel, a few screws and maybe some hose clamps if you want it really crude and still using stripper clips.

What is actually required to make this modification successful is dremel/milling work to the bottom half of the bolt, a bit of the receiver and then just monkey work to set it at the correct angle and have a simplistic mechanism for holding the mag in place and thus not modifying it at all.

I've got the HiCal XCR adapter and I now know all the exact angles to make the rifle work or not.

From a fabrication point of view, this mod you want done is REALLY SIMPLE, just time consuming.

Currently if I remove my Wartak scope rail I can feed 10 rounds off a stripper clip no problem.

Owning the adapter that I do, almost all the thinking work is already done.

For what someone would charge you hourly for that modification, you would likely be spending less buying the adapter as they most likely do not have the knowledge of all the magical angles required.

I for one could do that job no problem but is it worth it.......................who knows.

nobody had to fix that adaptor .....
You fix the rifle to solve that problem.

mod is not that hard once you understand what needs done;)
