So I've decided on the Versa Max and the funds are now available. Debating between the 26" barrel model (not the Sportsman) or the 22" Tactical. Either way, I'm going to have Casey at Tactical Ordnance work his magic on it. By my math I am looking at approximately $400 more for the 26". I am primarily interested in 3-gun but will also use it for trap shooting. I really want to go with the Tactical but something tells me the extra barrel length would make the 26" a better overall shotgun. Would I be able to get away with trap shooting with the 22" barrel (threaded for chokes)? Thoughts?

Best to ask the man himself. I know that he used to use the Sportsman (that's what mine started off as) a while back but now prefers the Tactical as a base unit. I think that a dedicated 3Gun shotgun is best served as that and while it can be used for trap, I think in the end you will have to choose.

i bought my base gun direct from casey, he modified it before shipping it.... mine was tactical model and as per casey and the fact the shotgun is a 3.5" reciever after his mods are done the gun is a 7+1+1

you actually SAVE money starting with the tactical, better stocks.... threaded barrel of the proper length, so on and so on. one thing i highly recommend is get the rear express sight put on the vent rib, it not only makes your slug shooting more accurate but also gives you great reference if your lifting your head on other loads as well.....

Yes, I am getting the gun through Casey too to make it easier. I'm still not decided on the mag extension to make it 7+1. Not sure if I want the hassle of trying to explain to a LEO that it is a 3.5" receiver when the barrel is stamped 3".

get casey to check the chamber and stamp 3.5" on it then..... "problem" solved

When I was up to see Casey last, we discussed the whole chamber length question and he told me that the chambers in both models are the same. The option of being able to load 7+1+1 I would think would mostly be used in a competition setting and not a hunting one. I think that if it was used in the latter, you would have bigger issues to worry about. Like I said before, mine started off as a Sportsman, but if I had to start from ground zero, I would lean to the Tactical for being able to use some of what's there already. Hhmm ? Now this has me thinking of building a backup. LOL.

If it's not strictly for serious 3-Gun competition, does the extra shell matter much?

I was in the same dilemma a couple months ago and decided I didn't wanna lose sleep over it so I had the magazine extension plugged to 5.9 - 3" capacity. I have no intentions of competing so it wasn't worth the stress. I went with the Tactical but I still replaced some of the "upgraded" components.

I choose what I believed to be the best all around length; not a "tactical" with an 18.5" barrel and not a sporting with a >26" barrel. Since it's my first firearm I really don't know what I want and/or what I need. It's currently in transit and should be here on Monday........Merry Christmas to me.

Yup, that's what I have asked Casey to do. 6+1 2.75" shells (plus a ghost load) is good enough for me. What else did you have upgraded?

I am going to have the feed port opened up, the carrier welded, lengthened and TiN coated, bolt machined, fluted and TiN coated, Taran spring kit and the mag extension. I figured the oversize bolt handle, bolt release and safety on the Tactical look good enough as is. And Casey said the mag follower is good to go as is.

It would be quicker to tell you what I didn't do.....LOL

Here is a list of my mods:

Open up feed port and blend in, remove dimples in mag tube
Weld tip of carrier to lengthen and eliminate forked end
Machine and flute bolt with Titanium Nitride coating
Titanium Nitride coat extra parts
-Carrier
-Taran Tactical Bolt Handle
-Trigger
-Feed Latch Release
Install ports in barrel
Tactical Ordnance Extended Magazine Extension
Remington Jumbo Safety
Taran Tactical Bolt Handle
Cerakote

I probably could have knocked off $400 - $500 easy but I wanted what I wanted.....:)
