Hi,

Figured I share some pics of an interesting rifle that just kinda dropped into my lap the other day.

It appears to be an Israeli 22 caliber conversion of a late war K98. It has a winter trigger guard, cupped butt plate and laminated stock.

The barrel is marked Remington and the bolt is perpose built the reciever has been modified also.

Bore is shiny and I must say I put 80 rounds through her today at ranges of 10 to 100 yards and the gun shot VERY well.

This rifle is out of my spectrum of knowledge and it seems there isn't much in the way of written info on them. I have figured out that FN made 1000 trainers for Israel but those were built to be 22 call rifles, this one is something different.

Thought perhaps a few of the more seasoned members here could shed some light on this gun.

Anybody here have one of these or ever seen one??

I have one. Cant help to much on history. They are very accurate but can be picky on ammo.
Trevor

Is yours an FN or k98 conversion like this one?? This one seems accurate with the 3 types of ammo I tried today. I wasn't shooting groups though so I'll have to wait and see how she does on paper. My offhand steel shooting today was 2" sqaure targets at10 yards, 5" shooting tree at 50 yards and a 10" gong at 100. Gun hit every target if I did my part.

Was a pleasure to shoot I must say.

Mine is a brno 98 converted to .22. Same remington barrel but long rifle isn't scratched out. Yours looks to be in a little better shape. I have about half a dozen different trainers now and the all are a blast to shoot.

Mine used to be a VZ-24

Hey what is that screwed into the right side of the receiver ring by the bolt? Mine just has the receiver ring cut but nothing added. Cant ad a picture I'm out of town.

I am thinking that piece is supposed to act as support for the top locking lug of the bolt since that whole area of the receiver is milled off. Without it, the bolt might misalign with the chamber in the closed position since the original extractor isn't present on that side after the conversion.

These are pretty common and typical of Israeli K98k's, they are built on a wide variety of receivers. All that I have seen use the Remington made barrels though. I have never owned one or even shot one but they are supposed to be accurate. I just never had much interest in them since they aren't really a Mauser any more. No claw extractor.:p

I had no idea these were common, first one I've seen in the flesh so far. But that being said I collect almost exclusively great war, tansitional period and black powider rifles so stuff like this may go unoticed by me.
It is VERY accurate though!!
Thanks for the info.

Maybe I shouldn't have said "common". They aren't exactly rare though. I see them at gun shows and they pop up on the EE from time to time so they're out there.
