elcan specterdr 1-4x, post some pics of how you have your mounted

Very nice but I'd ditch the BUIS to put the DR back a notch. I find the DR is almost awkward with how short the eye relief is. If it didn't have such amazing glass I would have sold it by now.

Interesting. I thought I was the only one that thought this.

I try not to be captain obvious, but you guys realize there's BUIS on top of the Elcan right???

Of course it does, but they're pretty basic, very high above bore, and have a very short sight radius. I don't see a downside to being able to remove the optic entirely and still have sights.

Leave your rifle outside overnight, at sunrise when it is covered with dew try to use the optic.

That is why there are irons on the DR, the military users requested them, same reason they were on the C79s.

Anyone complaining about the Specters eye relief needs to compare them to the ACOG offerings.

The main reason my ACOG was sold last year. I liked it but the eye relief was not user friendly.

So when was the last time your Specter DR failed on you?

Exactly. Why bother with BUIS on a rifle with a $2000 optic that is built like a tank and doesn't need batteries?

You're talking about back up sights, you only need them to be basic. They're not intended to be used other than in an emergency or when you're going through a building and want full field of view of your surroundings to hit someone who jumps out from behind a wall or some other close cover. They aren't made for target shooting at 100 yards.
The downsides to BUIS on a rifle that doesn't need them is increased cost, increased weight, more crap to snag on things, and they interfere with mounting your primary sight in it's optimal position.

Valid points. Considering them :)

Further points to the Tavor w/DR. Flip up BUIS that disappears into the rail until needed. If by some fluke the DR ####s the bed and you can't use the built in peep sights (which are actually pretty good close quarters) flip the ARMS levers, toss the optic, deploy the built ins and you're back in the fight.

@CobraGT

I'm looking for a DR and am going to mount it on my M4A1, setup is same as yours. My question is, does the fixed front sight get in the way of the sight picture on both 1x and 4x? My concern is if the sight picture would look too "busy" with the fixed front sight and the DR's ranging reticle all visible at the same time. Thanks.

Photos of mine mounted, as requested. Works well for me, but ideally it would be one notch farther back.

Nope, don't really notice it at all :)

tried both setups repeatedly, back to just the elcan and took the buis's off..... the lop was way to short with buis mounted causing my trigger hand to be tourqued oddly.... (6'4" with long arms), remounted the elcan as far back as it would go and all is good.

Not sure how you guys can say a front sight doesn't interfere with the sight picture. With my DR I can see my thumb on the top rail when on 1x, the front sight may not stop you from being able to shoot it but you'll definitely see it in the fov and to me that's interference. I don't like having anything but my target in my fov when shooting and having the front sight plain as day blocking the lower half of the crosshairs obscuring the holdover marks would annoy the heck out of me. This is a non issue when switched to 4x but not at 1x.
YMMV
