New rifle suggestion.

Thanks. Only reason l was favouring WSM over wm was due to being told it had slightly less recoil for near identical ballistics, up to 180g. Not set on anything and open to advice...currently have the x bolt, carbon fluted in 30 06. It's been great. Thinking of going up to a 300 just for increased range and knockdown power. That said, the 06 has never let me down on moose or bison...

Hi Brett,

You already have about as good a rifle as you could get for mountain hunting, as well as moose, caribou, and bear. Good!

Now get yourself a 9.3X62 for woods bison, moose, caribou, and bear. Perfect!

A Browning X-bolt stainless stalker in 338 win mag would do everything you want. It would likely be a hundred bucks or so over your price range.

If you were ok with not having a removable magazine, I would recommend a Weatherby Vanguard synthetic stainless in 300 Wby. Very reliable and accurate rifle.

you can get removable mag for weatherbys

How about a .416 Rigby. That would be perfect. Say a CZ 550 Safari.

About 300$ more than your budget though.

Given your requirements, I'd go with the Tikka T3 in 300 WIN MAG. I like 300 WIN MAG over 300 WSM as the 300 WIN MAG handles the long heavier (200grn +) bullets better, the COL specs of the 300 WSM mean the heavier bullets intrude on the powder space. On a T3 specifically, they are all long action anyhow, so no real reason to choose the 300 WSM over the WIN MAG.

Thought you guys were my friends... Was pretty sure l needed a new rifle...

We certainly are, my choice is the 375 either in the H&H configuration or the Ruger.... especially if you plan on hunting Bison and other big critters..
Keep an eye on the EE in the New Year and you might just find a good deal.

Brett we are your friend.

just trying to spend on the right tool lol ....

9.3x62 or 375 can be a good start to have a difference with the 30-06 ....

the joke about the 9.3x62 is about our why not? that promoted so hardly the 9.3x62 that we called the .366 Wagner and he lives in town here.

enjoy your and merry christmas.

yours truly.

Well the 30-06 isn't a shy puppy... Between the 300 WSM and the 300 WM. There isn't a hole lot of difference in performance. Either / or is fine. Now going up in caliber is another option that is a tad more interesting in itself. The 9.3 is on my New Years resolution list, and I would select that over a 338 WM. The 9.3 charms an interest due to being a variant of the 30-06 case, which can be necked up to a 32-06; 338-06, 35 Whelen and the 9.3 mm. All of them are great preformers and obtain decent ballistics out of the parent case.

This. Unless you are near Whitehorse, then you must get a 9.3 :)

Some people even call it a .366 Wagner for some reason ... It is no joke:

About to buy a new rifle. Have around $1000 for the rifle only. I'm an experienced shooter. Rifle will be my one rifle do all as that's the way l roll. Will use it for moose, bison, caribou and on occasion sheep or bear. Preference for stainless, synthetic, removable magazine. Leaning towards a T3 Superlite in 300 WSM. Thinking over time l can upgrade stock (B & C), replace bolt shroud, and have something still fairly light and accurate. Any input on other make model or caliber / cartridge to consider would be greatly appreciated.

Save your $ until you can get the rifle you want. If you spend that 1k now, you wont have enough left over to get a decent scope for the gun, which is a bit more important in the scheme of things. Also, the .300 WSM has shown that when handloaded comes up short in the velocity/bullet weight department. Get a .300 WinMag if you want to get 3000+fps with a 180 with your reloads and store bought ammo is cheaper as well. Or get a Ruger Ammerican .30-06 and put a decent scope on it and go hunt everything from coyotes to buff.
