FN CAL sporter

The modern FN rifles fall within all three categories. Select fire ones that are prohibited 12.2. Ones that were originally select fire but are now converted are prohibited 12.3 converted auto. Those that were never select fire like this one are prohibited 12.5. It is funny I can own the 12.3 FN's but not the 12.5 FN's.

I get a tear when I see these rarer rifles destroyed. I wonder the value of it if it was functional. would look awesome beside my FNC

It's a terrible shame.

Side note, I'm curious to see if the one on the EE sells at the price tag.... caught me off guard. Not that I have a clue of it's value.

I believe that the FN CAL is not a Fal but a new design, therefore not a variant. I don't recall if it was specifically prohibited by name (like the FNC)?

Are you referring to the FAL

or the CAL?

Or both?

The CAL. It was a unique design that predates the FNC. Very high quality but expensive to manufacture which is why it was discontinued.

Just checked... Not on the list. If I had 10k I might grab that dewat and restore it :)

Okay...if the FN CAL wasn't made a prohib 12(x) by C 68 (i myself assumed/thought that the gov"t deemed it an FN FAL variant), Why would anyone in their right mind deactivate one?? After all, it would then be non restricted or restricted AND in shootable condition.

I'm almost certain that in the copy of C 68 I went through years ago, any FN variant (FAL, FNC, CAL) as put on the 12(x) list. Then again, the CAL was such a rare bird they probably simply overlooked it. Was a semi only version ever offered to civilians? Or only Converted autos?

The CAL is a unique design, not a variant of the FAL or FNC. The sporter version is exceedingly rare, perhaps less than 500 produced. Even the full auto military versions were made in numbers only between 15,000 to 30,000. However the existence of the military version suggests that a barrel, bolt and other parts could be sourced to bring a dewat back to life...

What would be even better is convince FN to revive production of the CAL (but using stanag magazines) for the Canadian market, no chance of that really but we can dream :)

The FN CAL is FN's first crack at making 5.56 rifles. It is too complicated to make, and therefore it was abandoned and FN designed FNC to replace it.

There is a lot of sheet metal stamping, it will be very expensive to set up to make a rifle like this again.
