Hey Colt guys, one of these are going to be on my list soon. Question is which one. So what would be the difference between a antique SAA having a complete upgrade ( new barrel, cylinder, trigger upgrade. And a new gen 3. I know cost and status but what about functionality? Either one I get will be fired regularly.

The Antique won't have the cylinder pin quick release button...you need a screwdriver to remove the cylinder (Gen 1) With a set of Wolff springs, they are both a dream to shoot and last forever.

On top of Coachgun's comment, the newer production will have zero concerns about what sort of diet of ammunition you feed it.

The old guns you need to really know what is what in them and play it accordingly.

There are some exceptions, like I used to own a first gen Colt SAA that was converted by Colt to .38 special back in the 1950s, could shoot all modern .38 special (non +P/ect) ammunition all day.

I also installed a Wolff main spring and does it make for a slick quick shooter.

Some old memories to repost.

Few years ago I just had to have a Colt SAA & a Winchester 1895 Lever Action...sure miss them but way life goes.

Upside to the old school is you can bring them to the bush if it is Antique status, downside is it WILL cost you a couple grand more than likely an how much it is worth and how rare it is, remains in your mind when you are out with it so tends to make you a bit careful.

Thanks guys, that is some fine looking guns you guys got. I got my RPAL last year and wanted a Colt but never had the money at that exact moment . So I got a Uberti El Patron .45. But for some reason the real thing keeps gnawing at me :). One more question please. I've seen a couple of good deals on the 7 1/2 barrelled Colts, is it possible and OK to cut the barrel down on one of these? Or maybe just buy a new barrel?
