I am in the middle of a new ar build and am not likeing the current price on quality upper parts. It hard to look past the price of the NEA uppers. I had an NEA 10.5 a few years ago and it was an utter POS which turned me away from the brand. I have heard that the new gen 2 uppers are bullet proof. Does anyone have one that can give me a little insight?

Got what I assume is a Gen 2 (~3 mo old) complete 18" DMR. Not particularly memorable accuracy out of the gate, improved a bit with lapping the upper and installing an ALG Defense free-floated rail (controls torque MUCH better than timing a notch). Have issues with other barrels and uppers and their BCG/buffer system. Haven't completely solved it, but between the full auto BCG and the slightly longer than spec buffer spring a milspec 14.5 inch barrel + upper with NEA gas block and gas tube was having serious FTE issues. Extractor and or ejector might be at play too.

Would I do it again... Hard to say. Probably not.

Buy once, cry once worked for my wife's engagement ring. Probably should have applied the same logic to my first AR.....

YMMV.

I have a newer 10.5" NEA upper that I ran on a couple of different lowers with no major issues. Only thing was the rear take down pin if fairly tight, so I dremeled the hole a little. I liked it enough to later buy an NEA lower to go with and it's been working fine. I know in the past they had some issues, but from what I've seen in the later models, they got the message and are making better quality stuff now.
I've added a couple of things to it - namely a Geiselle S3G trigger, BAD and ambi safety and a set of buis. I do a lot of 3-gun/CQB type practise and it's become one of 2 guns that are my go to for that. The other is a PWS, so it's in fairly good company.

At one point I lost the detente pin and spring for the safety (just a dumbass move) and NEA sent me another N/C - was very surprised.

Why would you do that? It should be tight, the rear take down pin. My one rifle I have to squeeze the upper and lower together hard to push the pin in.

Take it for what's it's worth as I currently have two builds utilizing NEA receiver components. One is a forged upper on an Armalite lower that is my race gun. It was very tight at the rear take down pin that freed up the more I used it. It required minor work with my choice of a Phase 5 charging handle due to the larger charging handle guide lugs. I would not call it "mil spec" so it would not fit.

The second is a billet upper on a billet lower which has a good fit between the two allowing for an easy take down. This is on a longer range 30 caliber rifle. The function of this rifle is good however I must look past the fine machine marks that are not on other very high end manufacture components, like my Midwest Industry billets receiver.

I can not voice an opinion on any other NEA components other then the receivers which I am very happy with.

ya..... So I'm looking at a cheaper alternative for the moment! The Lmt mrp upper I want to built is going to cost me upwards up 3 grand with current pricing.
Not exactly a regular upper. Lots of affordable yet quality uppers available. No need to take a risk on a NEA.

Aero Precision, Stag and Anderson all come to mind

You aren't saving money by buying crap parts. Buy a colt or a DD or spikes, it will save you money I promise. Buying crap is penny wise and pound foolish.

I'd buy matched uper/lower rather than buy them saperately, especially on billet CNC receivers.
Miss mached upper and lower from differnt manufactures (or forged and bilet ) can have very high possibility of fitment issues, either too tight or too lose.

NEA have very good wattanty. Take a bit of time, but they do stand behind their products and willing to slove your problems.

I prob buy an other set for PDW build, and i wish to see their AR10 in the future.

Been a firearm manuafacture in this mostly left-wing driven country is hard, and try to mass produce everything in house, in canada, is even harder. Those canadians bravely chosed a bumpy road rather than sources items over the boarder, and getting better everyday, they are the real drving power of canadian industry. That's some great spirit that we have been neglacted for a while. Let's not forget the tragedy of Nortel, Blackberry, Bombardier, ext, we should supprot our own industry.
