I purchased a Weatherby Ultra Lightweight in 300 Win Mag the other day and was wondering what MOA you are achieving with yours, using the factory barrel? Thanks

Most likely it will shoot 0.75-1 MOA with a load it likes. The odd rifle out there will shoot better and the odd rifle will shoot worse. Remeber to grade the rifle by what it shoots consistently and not the odd .3 MOA group that every rifle will throw out once and awhile.

I don't know the exact contour of the Wby UL but in my experience with mountain rifles they can be picky on bedding and many like the barrel to be bedded several inches from the lug.

The Mark V in general seem to be inconsistent as far as accuracy goes, I was very disappointed with both of mine. There seem to be more complaints of accuracy issues with the Ultralightweights, than with the other Mark V models.

I have heard this a few times from different people now...

I have had 3 ultralights. And they all shot MOA or better. The 6 lug action is a lot lighter and if the trigger is not properly adjusted it can be hard to shoot a 6 pound rifle with a 5 pound trigger. The super lights require a whole different technique to shoot them well, at least in my experience...

I've never owned a tack driver mkV. All seem to be "hunting accurate" -1.5"-2" @100yds.

Vanguards on the otherhand, every one I own shoots well under 1"

The two ultralights I had (both 6-lug actions) both shot very well. I certainly wouldn't be worried buying one. Bigbraz summed it up well in my opinion. The guys who can't shoot the ultralight mark V well won't shoot any ultralight well. Ultralights aren't like shooting a 8lb+ rifle. Just my $0.02

Just amazes me on how the opinions are from one end of the spectrum to the other! Only one way to find out how this one shoots eh. Under 2" @ 200 yards is acceptable to me!

One thing I will never understand or accept is weatherby let the cheaper vanguard outshoot the more expensive make v. Do they want to figure it out and solve the issue ?

I'm a Sako and Remington action guy and would never buy myself a Weatherby...Just goes against my better judgement...But I do have a Mark V Ultralight in 30-06 that a hunter I outfitted gave me when I got him a 191" whitetail last fall.

The rifle is extremely light and handy, even with a 3-12 Swarovski on it and I find myself carrying it around a lot more then I care to admit...Loaded up with hot 165 Sierra boat tails it shoots around MOA on my 400 yard gongs down in the raven every time I care to knock on them...The only thing I have found is the first shot more then not goes a bit high on me and then the thing settles down and makes a cluster...I think the reason for the first high shot is I forget how light the muzzle is and let that first shot flip a bit...Then I bear down and the POI settles down.

I still wouldn't buy a Weatherby but I sure ain't letting go of this handy bugger!

LMAO, Nice post Lastgun )

Did you snag the last one on sale from Cabela's? I decided to go for it and they were sold out. Great price they had them for.

Yet I did paid $1,560, I owe you a beer . If it does not shoot 1 MAO, I will sell it to you for a great price!)

I have had a few Weatherby Ultra lightweights.
My .270Wby mag is an honest 3/4" gun or a bit better. This is more impressive when you consider its diet is 140gr Accubonds at a bit under 3400fps.
I also own a .240wby mag in an ultra lightweight. Its a 1/2" gun with 95gr ballistic tips at a leisurely 3250fps. It will shoot 85gr tsx's into 1" at 3450fps.
I sold a .300wby Ultra lightweight that shot ok with 200gr Accubonds but was nothing to write home about.

High velocity chamberings in pencil weight barrels is generally not a recipe for great accuracy but those 2 rifles shoot very well.

My ultra lightweight isn't so lightweight any more. I rebarrelled it with a #2 Gaillard and its twice the rifle it was before. Dragged it all over the world since then. On the other hand, I got it cheap.

Weatherby Mark Vs may very well be over-rated, but so are Sakos and Coopers. I've got those too. You're not going to find much made by man that's perfect.

Dogleg, what did it cost you to have Gaillard re-barrel it, all in? How much does it weigh now? Picked mine up on sale for $1,560.00, so I have no problem getting it rebarreled by Gaillard, still will be a good deal with the new barrel )

Also did you have it glass bedded and is it free floating now and did Gaillard do all the work to include installing it on the stock? Thanks

I will give them both a call today. What MOA are you getting now and what did you get before the workup? Thanks

Why not shoot the damn thing first?

Oh I will, just wanted to do the research to see how much time it would take to get done and the costs involved in the worst case scenario, I am hoping for the best. Called Weatherby they said with the rights ammo I should get > 1" @ 100 yards . their guarantee on this rifle is 1 1/2" @ 100 yards.

This is a great post on ultralights. I don't totally buy the cold bore thing and suspect it's more "cold shooter".
