How to use mod 70 safety

Well the op's topic was Winchester model 70...........

It's all relative..... But interrelated....

No offence guido, like your posts.....

But not sure in what situation someone would not want a round chambered except maybe BC mountain..... Or road hunting?

Also seems odd to me that not having a round chambered would be the "way to go", yet same person would be willing to sacrifice that "needed" safety measure based on prey and conditions.....

In other words, if on is chasing an upland bird or a rabbit, chamber should be full.... Otherwise don't rely on your safety and have nothing in the chamber? Safeties are safeties..... Thy other work or they don't..... Truthfully, firearm maintenance is just as impotent imop....

I carry a rifle with a three-position safety with the chamber loaded and the safety all the way back in the fully locked position. The middle position is only used to unload.

The exception however the Ruger 77/44 that is my farm rifle. It is stored out of the safe, action open, unloaded with a magazine close at hand. The safety is kept in the middle position because to deploy the rifle in a hurry I will need to insert the magazine and operate the bolt.

I have had no less than three people AD a rifle while hunting, within three feet of my face. THREE. Ironically they all like to hunt with a hot chambers. And we weren't near any animals in all incidents.

This is one of the the problems I have with safeties. How do you know if they don't work?
Proper gun handling is WAY safer than any switch on a gun.

I agree.... For, my applications, having a "hot chamber" is necessary..... Doesn't mean the rifle is not safely pointed or I have my safety on so I can wave the thing all over the place....

I know you equate upland seperately based on the thread, but the principal is the thing imop.... Years of upland hunting, often with partners, has taught me to keep my gun pointed in a safe direction.... Same applies to rifles....

Now, that being said, if having abound chambered was not a huge if not insurmountable advantage, I agree.... You can never be "too safe"

Great discussion!

Thanks to you CGNrs i read the Online Kimber manual, it states what the 1st reply mentions.
Forward- Shoot
Middle- unload
Back- safety . (Always rear)

Mentions not to use the Middle for hunting as its designed to be Flicked past when needed.

I also agree with testing safety and triggers out to determine of your Gun is faulty or not.
I know I do.

As mentioned Muzzzle awareness is a Key..

Well, one things for sure WL, the model 70 safety is the best one out there.

Different strokes for different folks...

I think the tang safety of the X bolt is far superior.
Nothing wrong with the browning tang safety, I've always liked it. I have an A-bolt 2 position. I don't have experience with the X-bolt safety, but I did play with it in the store. I like the feature of cycling the bolt with the safety on. What makes the X-bolt safety superior?

It is located in a secure place not disturbed by any accident and very easily accessed by the shooter... and the safety is either on (and locks the bolt) or off... no middle position and. If you want to lift the bolt with the safety on, there is a separate release on the bolt handle for that... It's a marvelous design to use.
