Hey everyone,
I'm interested in getting into some shooting sports in the coming year.
I joined my club last year and since I've accumulated a couple firearms, and been practicing whenever my wallet allows the ammo.
After taking my range holster course in the new year, what other steps should I take?
Am I able to compete in a 3gun competition with the equipment I already got? (WC 92g(or s&w 686), vz58, and a Hatsan 12g pump(with multiple chokes)) another thing I'm curious about would be the amount of mags, and wether a vest is a good idea? Or are holsters pretty much only used?
I'm working on an ar build but I, not sure I'll have an upper ready to go by next year.
Also my shotgun I purchased for hunting/clays etc.. What do guys use for 3gun?

I think I need to start getting out and watching the matches, just hoping for some guidance..

I'm a member at Galt Sportsmen club which has a great 3gun program, I just need to get more involved I think.

You're on the right track - coming out and watching and learning is a great idea and will help you decide what type of guns and gear that YOU want to run. And at Galt you can certainly use what you've got to shoot 3gun.

If you come out to observe one of our monthly 3gun club matches you will see a wide variety of firearm types as well as some people using belts while a few others using vests. Our crew is a friendly bunch and we've all been where you are right now so we are more than happy to answer your questions, explain why we make the gear choices we do, etc. Hope to see you out soon!

Seems like the guns you have are great to get started. As far as carrying everything almost no one uses a vest. It's impractical and slow. One thing to watch for with your rifle is the ammo. Steel core ammo is usually not allowed. Galt has the Valentine's Day match coming up. I believe Oxford will have a 2 gun match in May aswell.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I've joined the mailing list for g3g, hope to find the time to get out and see what it's all about.

And in regards to my rifle, it is chambered in .223, and I use ar-mags, is that ok?
what about mag capacity? Can you use LAR and BEO mags?

Also I have a useless but tacticool fake can, should I take that off for matches?

I run beo mags myself. Most do. As for the fake can do what you like. I don't take anything that isn't going to help my performance.
A compensator in place of the can could go a long ways.

Definitely compete with what you've already got and don't buy anything until you've been to a few matches. You'll have a much better idea of your needs and you'll have the benefit of seeing what others are using. Beo mags are the norm. Versamax or Benelli are the usual shotguns but all types are represented.

I run beo mags myself. Most do.

I am also looking into getting into 3-gun and have looking at the Beowulf mags as they have a 13-14 capacity. How is the use of them going to be affected the the Bulletin the RCMP released about their now, prohibited status? Do people use LAR?

I appreciate any help, as it has been a slightly confusion research ride.

Here we go again!
Here is the link for the RCMP bulletin regarding magazines.

It is my understanding that what you are referring to is a LETTER drafted by a tech at the RCMP on his interpretation on some magazines coming into Canada.

I read it over a few times, and I BELIEVE that they are legal to use, since they were not specifically designed for use in the AR. I found this Q and A from Caliber Mag which goes along that line.

But like many people have said, most clubs regulate you to only hold 10 in the mag, so with that said, is there any benefit in using the beowulf over the lar?

None of the clubs I shoot at in Southern Ontario have that rule.

The snarkie replies are because on the Internet we are all jerks. Seems the same questions come up every week. Best thing to do if your interested in multi gun is come out to a few matches. Sign up use the gear you have. Once you get to a match you'll find nine out of ten shooters very helpful. If you have bel mags and they won't allow it fine just load them to ten. Just come out and shoot don't worry about the small details.

I'm not sure why I've received two snarky replies - I'm simply looking for clarification. Thanks for the info, regardless.

I'm not sure which two posts you considered "snarky" but when you lead off with mis-information about Beowulf mags like "their now prohibited status" and "most clubs regulate you to only hold 10 in the mag" you are bound to get people shaking their heads. The reality for those of us using these mags is that mis-information like that causes us a lot of grief on the range.

Questions and looking for clarification is good, spreading bad info isn't.

A safe holster that will retain your handgun when you are shooting your rifle prone is a requirement.
It doesn't need to be a locking holster. But make absolutely sure your handgun can't come out unless you want it out.

A $10 shotshell belt from Canadian Tire will hold 25 rounds. It's the only accessory you need for your shotgun in your first match.

LAR mags will be fine for your rifle. Bring 4 or 5 mags, and some method of carrying them.

After your first couple of matches, you can start spending big money on specialized equipment if you want to. But that's down the road a bit.

I suggest take Black Badge course , it's better then club Holster course & with that u can shoot matches in lots of different clubs

Had a kick-ass hour long talk with RunningFool this afternoon.

Every question I asked I got answered.

2016 Galt here I come.
