the wife just bought me a bps 28 ga and sometimes not all when you fire the safety engages preventing 2nd shot. I shot it from the hip a couple times and noticed it wasn't me hitting it and some times it would be great others it would be put on.. just wondering what would cause this ?

thanks

Justin

I had this happen with a 28 gauge Browning BPS that I use to own.I took it to a gunsmith and he fixed it.Just forget what the problem was for sure ,but seems to me it was dirt.

I have seen this on Mossberg 500 models as well. It seems the recoil inertia causes the top tang safety to engage under recoil. On Mossberg's adjustment of the safety retention screw cured it. The Browning safety system is a whole lot better than the Mossberg system (material wise) and may or may not be as easily adjusted as the Mossberg. Both will require the trigger assembly to be removed to have a good look.

Is not a common problem with the bps. If the gun is new return it for repair. If not and the trigger has to come out make sure it is done by someone that has did this before
Not a job for someone new to browning bps. Out is easy, IN not at all for a first timer.
Cheers

It was a pot of coffee and 7 or 8 temper breaks the first time I tried to reinstall a BPS trigger group. Now it only takes about a half an hour....

Mine was on a bps 10ga that I was going to pei with the next morning. I was in panic mode and at least 3 hours since that was before one could watch videos on the internet
Now it is no problem
Cheers

This seems to be a common problem on the BPS 28 ga from the factory . I know of 2 other 28 ga BPS guns that had the same problem . the problem is easily fixed by adjusting the tension on the safety plunger spring .

Interesting. Must be a certain production run effected since I have two of these in 28ga made about 7 years apart and both of mine are fine other than they don't fit me as nice as the 28ga wingmasters or model 37's do.:) Think my dam arms are too short ;)
Something to watch for now in the future on these
Have you only seen it in the 28ga?? no others
Cheers

The same for me Mac.I found the 28 gauge BPS I had too long.Perhaps as you say, we just have short arms.

OR maybe me thinks me and you are SPOILED when it comes to shooting the various models of 28ga. ;)
Can you believe I still have not fired that Ruger yet or the last Akkar ;)
Look at that a400 28ga grouser just listed . What a sweet gun I have to stop looking at it or mama is going to get real mad at me AGAIN :)
Happy Holidays :)

1 gun was new from Cabelas about year or so ago . my friend just retuned it for a replacement . the other I was told about at shoot some where I was . the bps safety has 5 parts : Safety Switch , safety plunger , plunger spring , safety adjustment screw , safety retaining nut . The safety adjustment screw would lead me to believe that perhaps there is an adjustment to how freely the safety switch is permitted to move . My guess would be a QC leak at the plant in Japan . On my buddies gun the safety was a lot easier to move than on my 12 or 20 ga .

Could be right,Mac.I am pretty fond of my 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37.Too bad you have not had time to try out the 28 gauge Ruger and Akkar.Have not tried out the 28 gauge High Standard yet either.

Yes that is a nice 28 gauge self loader listed on the EE.

Amen to that. I got fooled by the brownells cleaning videos into thinking it was a quick and simple job to disassemble. After at least an hour of struggling I finally got the trigger group to snap back into place. Got it all together and looked down to see the slide lock lever still sitting on the bench.

If not new I would tackle it myself but sense the gun dealer is no good to deal with and wanting to make it right I'll ship it back. I did get one rabbit with it the other day. My first kill with a 28 and I must say I'm a huge fan!

A gun vise to hold the gun helps well with getting it back together. Not sure why that design hasn't been improved but I really like the bottom ejection
