All my rimfire rifles that I use for shooting off the bench at 50 yards have high magnification scopes. One is a fixed power scope, the others are variable, with 24X being the lowest. I recently got a 16X Weaver V16 scope in excellent condition at a price I could not resist. The trouble is now its been snowing and I probably won't get to a range to try the new scope until spring as the road to the range is not plowed. I'm wondering if 16X is enough.

My question is what magnification are you using for rimfire target shooting at 50 yards?

The question was what magnification are you using for target shooting at 50 yards.
I would believe the most common would be a 3-9 power, most of the rimfire optics are of this magnification.
I use a 2-7x32. Granted, I don't use it for target shooting at 50 yards, I use it on gophers at 50 yards and further.
4x for 50 yds and gophers .
4x ... simple.
3-9 VX-1 on my semi rimfire. 1" group easy at 25 yards, could probably half that if I put a little trigger time in but for tagging beer caps it's plenty.

Five say either 4X, 2-7, or 3-9 is good for shooting target at 50 yards.
For bench use,I have a 5-25x on my Anschutz 54MS-R.

And one for up to 25X.

For those that use lower power scopes, what kind of groups do you get on paper targets with 4X or 7X or 9X at 50 yards?

Proof that high magnification is not necessary to shoot tiny groups:

Anschutz 1827F 5-shot group @ 50yds with diopter sight set. Shot off bags as shown above with Lapua Center-X.

That sure is nice. The rifle and sights are not your average bear, that's for sure.

Admittedly that was the best group of the bunch but it was no problem holding 3/8"-1/2" on 5-shot groups.

If your focus is to print tiny groups then 24x or 32x with a fine target dot reticle would be terrific. That said any quality variable scope in the 12x -16x range will do the job just fine and be more versatile as well.

Cross hair thickness gets me at fifty yards.
My 'Merican has an older Trophy 6-18 with the AO.
I shoot the staples off the target corners when I'm done.
I've had a few decent scopes I've sold for the thickness of
the + hairs.

I use a 3x9 most times, because its the easiest to see through easily. The 3 & 4 power scopes work for me but take a but longer to get focused on the target.

I have 2 10/22's one with a Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9, the other with a Bushnell AR 3-12, i originally had a Elite 5-15 to mount but it was just to bulky IMO, i absolutely love the fine x hairs and center dot on the Nikon and super clear at all distances, the AR has faily thick x hairs.
