And a hard case too? Very nice.

Just had a visit from Canada Post. It comes with a 5/20 mag, looks like it was riveted for 10rounds then dimpled for 5 but only holds 4 rounds. I think someone messed the dimple job up. The fit is really tight but the 5 rounders drop free. The trigger has a consistent 4 pound break.
Thanks Wanstalls! I just checked the

That mag looks horribly done, I hope they are all not like that.

Yeah they used a punch on both sides. I'm really hoping that the extra 5/20's they bring in are not the same, cause it's really not worth the $100 per mag as is. I bought my 5 rounders from another dealer and have no issues with those.

Got mine just now - looks GREAT - except for the brutally pinned AND punched 20/4 round mag. Plus a phillips screw and washer at the front of the mag follower? It looks brutal. Hope it works well, but mine only holds 4 rounds as well. Little disappointed with that, but the rest of the gun is A1 perfect. Very front heavy though, moreso than I thought it would be. The stock is a little plastic-ey,but the metalwork is very nicely finished.

My 20 rounder is pinned different. Its along the back rib? Fits in and out perfectly. Haven't tried to load it yet.

Just wanna say thank you wanstalls and Tyson who set me up on the phone. You guys are awesome.

I was under the impression we would all be getting the shorter 5 rnd magazine with our orders. The pinning job is unacceptable. Would suck to get magazine that looks like it was pinned by a liberal that still has the price tags on his/her hand tools.
I hope they improve on the next batch.

The bottom of the mag feels like it's filled with something too... waaaay too heavy to be an empty shell. Can't remove the floor plate either!

This mag is a giant steaming pile in my opinion. Never seen anything like it. The punched part actually dimples the whole mag and deforms the rear spine. What's the point of all this?????

If that were my mag, I would be testing the Wantsall's warranty clauses. YMMV.

What a huge stinking pile of poo that mag is.

I've dimpled many pistol and rifle mags at the shop here, and to do a proper job, you spot-heat the area with acetylene first and use a punch with a fine rounded tip in the middle of the mag, not by the spine where it will deform.

And they riveted it as well and filled the mag bottom with epoxy or something? Unacceptable. In my personal opinion.

Goog grief. Got a picture?

The only times I've seen things like this are when they are pinned poorly (like this) and the magazine spring gets bound up, causing the front of the follower to droop. IF that is the case, cheater fixes like this ensure the rounds stand proud enough at the front of the mag to feed, else they will jam on the front lip of the mag and drive the bullet back into the case when the action cycles.

When I see stuff like that, I shake my head. It's not a proper repair, it's Gaetan's back-woods band-aid.

My understanding of these mags is that the floorplate is cast, not just sheet metal.

Okay here are some more pics:

Looks 'normal' except for the three glaring deficiencies:

Here is the screwjob on the follower... it does nothing, as it doesn't get far down enough in the mag to even 'hit' anything!

And here is the deformed spine. Didn't get a picture from the other angle, but it's also deformed front to back, which causes hanging issues (not drop free).

I think i'll call Gary on Monday...

Both of the mags I got from the other sponsor had a screw and washer in the follower. I'll check how many rounds they hold when I get home.

Hey realized I'm posting this in Wanstalls forum - potentially bad form. Not bashing Wanstalls in ANY way, as they've been great on comms and the deal in general. The gun is 100% perfect - but not sure how these mags made it through QA. Would be interesting to hear who did the pin job, and why the punch was needed!

Ya, my opinion is that those screws were put there to push the cartridge tips up more so that those crappy mags would not mis-feed. Unacceptable on a new firearm, if it were mine, I would request warranty service (i.e. mag replacement).

So it's not just Wanstalls -- I received my FNAR Standard today from another site dealer and the mag looks exactly the same. I haven't tried to fit rounds into it yet, as I don't have any 7.62x51 on hand. The other thing that made me wonder is the hard case -- it's fine for shipping the rifle, but once you put a scope on it, it'll be about as useful as nipples on a breastplate. Oh well, perhaps it's long enough for my FN-49.

Mag crimping

From the looks of the mag, had they crimped any lower (one more cartridge) it would have distorted the mag catch opening causing issues inserting or locking in the mag. Also if the rivet were any higher, it would interfere with insertion to the mag well.
Seems that a better way of neutering for compliance would have been from the bottom using a pin threaded into the thick base.
Looks like 5 round mags will be the likely only way of getting five rounds.
