Ruger Mini-14 ranch for a varmint gun

Get a Mini 14 with the adjustable choke.

lol, yah from what I can see here a mini14 is a good idea. I have a bolt gun. Was looking for a decent priced semi. The mini is a tank only issues were accuracy. Seems a lot of people have figured out ways to increase accuracy. Doesn't seem like a bad buy for me.

I have a 583 series mini 14 stainless. Once I got it from ejecting brass a county or two its a great shooter. 2 1/2" at 100 yards with iron sights and me not wearing glasses which I need to do, dropped to 2" with my glasses on. The front sight is thick (.080") which in my books is way too think.
I bumped into someone shooting a 582 series target model shooting 1 1/2 at 200 yards with a 3 x9 scope.

i picked up a 582 series last summer. accuracy plus threaded the barrel for a vortex 3 prong flash hider.
i put it in a hogue stock & mounted a vortex 1-4 viper.
it will consistently group 1" at 50 yards with ww 55 gr psp...best i can do anyways.
perfect coyote rig for me understanding both the rifles & my own limitations

Bought an updated model couple years ago. Opened the box and promptly returned it. Ruger should be ashamed for letting rifles like that out of their factory.

I have owned a mini-14 for years, and it is my ultimate truck gun. I have dispatched numerous coyotes, groundhogs and foxes with it. At the range, it is just plain fun to shoot and I find the accuracy acceptable for what it is. I always find it quite interesting that the fellows that always criticize the mini -14 for its accuracy, are the same guys that when I watch them shoot their "accurate AR's", couldn't hit a cow's arse with a hand full of rice!

not criticizing your post, and your AR experience , but at 168 feet that is a 3 plus moa group even when ignoring your flier.... it may be minute of coyote at 168 feet.... but highly unacceptable in a hunting rifle IMOP

20 rounds in a 4" group fast shooting, whats the other minus the flyer 4 rounds in 1.5" group - and thats unacceptable for a hunting rifle?
ill agree that unacceptable for a bench-gun but for a hunting rifle?
your standards are much greater then mine my friend.

ill take 20 rounds fast fired in 4" group for coyotes any day of the week.
now if that was my bolt action 223 id be complaining but it but for a semi.....

Heh, the guys who taught me to hunt, if you can hit a pie plate @ 100yrds, that's a dead deer and good enough in a rifle.

What i understand is that the ranch is a 3-4moa gun. So max would be a 100yard gun. I think that the comparison to a SKS is a bit harsh, but only a bit. If you are looking for a coyote gun, in my experience a heavy barrel semi is not needed. Predator is simply not a high volume pursuit, unlike praire dogs.

Ruger also had a reputation a few years ago as putting out product that only resembled a firearm. They pushed their production speed at the cost of quality control to meet demand. Dont know if this is fixed, but i am a Ruger fan, just not a 10/22 or Mini fan.

Older models could be hard-pressed to provide better accuracy than that, but any new model should be able to cut those groups in at least half without much trouble.

I'd have to say that coyote hunting is one of those few instances where a semi-auto can really have a significant advantage over a bolt gun. You're right, it's not a high-volume game like prairie dogs, but prairie dogs never force you to rush; you can take as much time as you want, so a bolt gun works fine. When a pair or trio of coyotes comes to a call, a semi can definitely up your odds of getting more than one, or maybe getting them all. Most of my coyote hunting takes place in fields bordered by woods on all sides. After the first shot, you are faced not only with a rapidly moving target(s), but with the certain knowledge that they only need to run a relatively short distance before they disappear. In that type of situation, speed kills.

i did put a accustrut on mine to test out if there was a difference and there was a little bit of a improvement.
Float the barrel (simple to do) and install 1911 buffers front and back of the operating rod and things will be smoother as well. Also change the gas port bushing to a smaller dia will stop the brass flying to Ottawa. ;)
