Ruger Mini-14 ranch for a varmint gun

Heh, the guys who taught me to hunt, if you can hit a pie plate @ 100yrds, that's a dead deer and good enough in a rifle.

Keep in mind we are talking a varmint gun. Minute of pie plate is no where near a varmint gun. Even an open country deer rifle should hit a pie plate at 300 off the bench.

I had a newer 582 series mini, hated everything about it. Clunky, heavy so so accuracy, fte.Dumped it and am much happier with my flamer vanguard 2 in 223.I know hit what I aim at and use way less ammo.

I shot 4 coyotes today with my mini..... The Fox Pro call is a real treat!

From 75y to 300(ish), all but 1 (the yote at 300) were a 1 shot DRT. Full disclosure, the yote at 300.... I emptied the mag....

I sold my mini in '09, and started on a quest for a "more accurate NR 223 semi". You name it. I tried it.... XCR, SU-16, Tavor, SL8... In late 2014, I bought a new production mini-14 ranch rifle.

It's more accurate than the 181 series rifle I used to own. It is a solid 2.5-3 moa gun with any ammo you choose. I am currently running MFS 55gr hp in if as I hate chasing brass in the snow!

IMVHO, the mini-14 is the best bang for your buck in a NR semi auto 223/556 rifle on the market in Canada!

What was wrong with it if you don't mind me asking?

Literally everything. I filled a sheet of paper with problems. From the sights installed crooked on the receiver (screw holes misaligned), to the fit of the rifle in the stock, to the weird hitch in the action, the gas block installed improperly, etc, etc. I was actually scared to shoot it.

20 rounds in a 4" group fast shooting, whats the other minus the flyer 4 rounds in 1.5" group - and thats unacceptable for a hunting rifle?
ill agree that unacceptable for a bench-gun but for a hunting rifle?
your standards are much greater then mine my friend.

ill take 20 rounds fast fired in 4" group for coyotes any day of the week.
now if that was my bolt action 223 id be complaining but it but for a semi.....

It is a good group indeed for "fast shooting".... but IMOP, that is not the way to test a rifle's hunting capability..... I usually test my hunting rifles by shooting a 5 shot group with all 5 shots coming from a cold barrel.... long pauses in between..... That tells me how accurate I can expect the rifle to be in a true hunting situation.... The fast shooting testing is good for testing th epotential of shooting "doubles" on coyote or wolf, but only truly valid if you aren't shooting all of the shots at the same target......

Oh my God I hope you have a silver flame proof suit around after posting on this board your positive feedback regarding the MINI?

Sold some magazines to a guy today, and basically heard the same story, he loves his mini.

I own a Mini-14 stainless/synthetic ranch rifle with an Aimpoint patrol range optic(red dot sight). I bought it knowing full well it os not a tack driver. Because I am shooting a red dot sight that is 2 MOA you do not sight in as you would a traditional scope but rather you sight in to be zero at 50 yards allowing you to hold without holdover to 250 yards. I set mine up accordingly and must say I was very surprised at the results. I use Hornady 55 gr Steel Match HP's, they are $30/50 rd box. At 50 yards I cleanly cut a loonie sized hole in a target with 20 rounds. To date I have taken the gun out to 150 yards and have no problem putting every shot in a 3"-4" group. Holding centre on a shoulder on a broadside shot that is a dead coyote in anybody's books. I shoot a Ruger 1V in 22-250 that is a superb shooting rifle and if I am going on stand calling with intentions to be able to shoot 300+ yards the 1V is going with me but for a fun little truck gun to be thrown in for shots of opportunity or hunting in close (under 250 yds) I would not hesitate for a second with the Ranch Rifle. And no it is not nor does it compare with an SKS in my books. I have owned both and I will take the extra $$ and put it on a Ranch Rifle any day!! Plus I like the 38" overall length and 6.5 pound weight! It's only 1" longer and 1 pound heavier than my Ruger 10/22 carbine!
