I've noticed that the m38 swedes seem to command a stronger asking price than their longer m96 brothers.
Then again , look on Tradex's sight , and they have lots of m96's,but no m38's. I'm talking about non sporterized.
I guess it's just demand and availability.
Was there a time when this was reversed? Was there more m38's available in the past?
Let's not even talk about the m94's ! LOL They are a different story , and one that sadly is NOT in my budget !

I don't recall when M38's were more plentiful or cheaper than M96's. There are, however, some really nice 38's floating around. Trick is to grab them as they float by. With 38's, there is no time to dawdle, somebody else will grab them. More 96's makes it a bit easier to be picky or slow on the draw.

I'm not looking for one. I have good examples of both the long + short rifles already.
I have just been noticing the prices of both lately.
I always thought they were worth about the same. Apparently not.

There has always been more of the 96s available , this ups the value of the 96/38 and the Husky38s. There is no difference in accuracy.
Enjoy

Interesting. I just took a look at production numbers in the Swedish Mauser book that I have and it mentions 60K M38's and 30K M96/M38's. That's a bit more than I thought. I guess the premium on M38's is due to relative rarity. The Swedish seemed to be very good at keeping the older rifles in good working condition and a result, many survived. Anyway, I'm relatively new to this so it's just speculation on my part. I do know that in the year or so that I've been looking at these guns the M38's seem to come up less frequently.

My m/96, a CG dated 1898, was overhauled in Carlsborg Arsenal and basically left as it was, apart from new wood and threading the muzzle. It still has the basic 300m sight, but a blank disc. Crown over CB is stamped underneath the wrist.

Theres been a couple getting high dollar lately for some reason, but personally, all things being equal I'd take a CG or Oberndorf 98 over a m38, just on the basis of historical significance.
