At the last gun show . I purchased some once used 338 Mag Herter's brass. Anyone used this brass before? I loaded some the other day and it looked like it filled the case more ,than the WW Super X brass .With the same amount of powder.

Herter's brass was marketed by Higginson's. [some still is] and is somewhat heavier than any commercial brass available.
I think that the source of some of it was Norma, but it may have been some other European source as well.

Regards, Dave.

Metalverken (Swedish) made a lot of the old Herters brass....I've got some in .303 and 30'06, has a distinct reddish copper tone to it....good idea to download it by 5%.
I think the newer stuff is S&B the Cabellas sells stateside.

I had a whole bunch of Herters brass in 338 win mag. Darn good brass. My only issue with it was the small flash hole in the primer pocket. It was difficult to get parts for the RCBS Jr. press I had and I ended up having to make up a base with hole in it to accept the brass and another to allow the primer to drop out of when pushed out with the punch I also had to make up. Not a big deal but just another step. Usually I punched out the primers before going to the press. In those days I was still using the lever/plunger/feed tube attachment to the press. I also had a bunch of 308win and 8x57maus cases from them. The flash holes on those were larger and much quicker to work with.

I liked that brass. I also liked Herters services. I was sad when they went the way of the Dodo. Mind you other mail order companies took over. They never really had the same amount of stuff for sale though and because we didn't have the internet then you had to order catalogues. They carried everything from fishing and archery equipment to after market custom parts for firearms as well as their own line of firearms.

I at one time bought 1000, 30 cal, 180 grain Flatbased softpoint bullets from Herters.

In their day, they were a decent bullet, and I have a couple of recovered ones that are
the most perfect mushroom you have ever seen.

I had some of the aforementioned 264 Win Mag brass. It was heavier than normal, and fairly soft.
Not a great combination in the 264, lol.

Regards, Dave.

I have used lots of 8mm metalverken in my mg34 and shot some of the brass 7 times and it is still going. very tough brass.

I have a few boxes of Herter's brass in 7x57, and it's printed right on the box, "Made in Canada", presumably by Dominion. I think where it was made and by whom depends on who was contracted to make it at that time. Given the large number of potential contractors, it would be tough to pinpoint where any given caliber and lot of brass was made.

Bud I picked up a pile of 338 cases years back. Used some in a 338 and necked some up to 358 Norma. I've loaded some of this brass about 15 times annealing the necks after 5 firings. Max loads are reduced 2 or 3 grs from loads with Win cases. I wish I could get more.

.303 Herter's I got from Higginson came in the same box. Made in Sweden. SS polished to clean the tarnish, loaded beautifully.

Good deal too at $16.50/50 just needs some good polishing....I'm also a fan of the Norma (Browning) 30'06 they have for $18/50....very nice brass.

Yeah, I snapped up some Browning (Norma) brass while I was at it. I literally giggled as I walked out the door. lol. The I we t to Beau's, bought beer and giggled again.
