Both of the axis gen 1 30/06 rifles my boy and I have.
Been hauled around hunting in a dusty truck for over 6 years.
Never disassembled , only lightly oiled the bolt from time to time with singer oil.
Both work flawlessly
Thank you to all who have made suggestions. I called savage arms today and the savage axis is known to have issues with the firing pin spring. They are sending me the parts needed to fix this.
The person I spoke to said the cold will not have any effect on how it strikes the ammo. They are made to fire in -50degree weather.

Seriously, before going through any more hassle, clean the bolt.....
Have you checked the length of protrusion of the firing pin at rest. Is it comparable to other Axis? The firing pin maybe screwed in to tight.
