Which 1911 is most reliable/affordable?

Another vote for STI.

These are in the majority when it comes to IPSC shooting (i.e. Classic Division). While they aren't perfect, they are reliable and have a track record. Also, lots of features for the price - particularly the Trojan.

Colt may may have been dominant once upon a time, but no longer. All of the old time IPSC guys I know - who got into the sport shooting Colt - all shoot STI (again, Classic Division) except for one guy who has a Springfield.

I'll take two lol

Colt too is expensive but im leaning towards them, ill never buy norinco

Alot of Norinco marked stuff is garbage but those 1911's are not one of those.
In fact, they are a good value. Not bad accuraccy, forged steel frame, series 70 safety...

The SAM 1911's seems to have great reviews.
Ruger SR1911 is also not a bad choice.

I have a NP27 and NP29 (9mm and .45ACP) 1911's from Norinco - both are great and quite accurate out the box. There is a thread on tuning them somewhat (mostly polishing) in the forums. There are numerous threads on how they perform, majority very positive findings.

For the price I think they have great value and they're enormously fun to shoot.

This is 2016.

The 1911 patents expired many years ago.
There is NO reverse engineering involved.
Colt and every other manufacturer uses the same drawings and specifications.

I own 18 1911 pattern pistols currently.
Some are Colt made.
My 1943 Colt 1911A1 can use the internals from my Norinco pistols and function correctly.
The Norinco pistol probably has better steel than the wartime Colt.

They are both reliable guns.

Reliable==Colt. Everything else is just a reverse engineered copy.
Affordable==lots of knock-offs available. You pick your price point.

Blasphemy! Everyone knows old 1911s were forged by the Dwarves to shoot through tanks! There is no way a Chinese gun can be made of better steel... They're not even quenched in angels tears for God's sake... ;)

Best bang for the $ I'd say was the Sig 1911 XO. Cabelas sold it for under $1K last spring but the price has gone up to just over 1K.

- Polished feed ramps
- SS match grade barrel
- Front strap checkering
- Fully dehorned
- Well fitted slide to frame with no rattle

I love my SAM 1911 Military enhanced. For just a shade more than a Norc, you get really nice sights and the fit and finish of the things are just about perfect. I can't imagine why someone would spend more. The only upgrade I would consider are grips to suit personal taste and possibly an ambi safety. It is far more accurate than I will ever be.

You will get what you pay for

Get Sam or Norinco, and you need to add parts or accurize it, look at the total final costs/

Best prices are Sigs, you can get one for around the $1000 mark, colts are around $1500, Kimber & STI in between both.

Stick with a mainstream brand if you want it to keep its value.

Just look at how many CUSTOMIZED Norcs/Sams are for sale on the EE, people won't pay for the work you done on it. Putting lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.

You never get back any of the $$$ you spend to customize anything, cars, guns, computers, etc... Its a labor of love.

I've gone through many a 1911 in my day and if your talking reliability, IMHO most of the focus should be on magazine compatibility and quality.
That's where 90% of any issues I've had originated from. Affordability, well if you are able, Sigs are top notch.

Ive been researching alot and when I came across Kimber ive heard theyre extremely overpriced and come with real ####ty mags... Looking at a springfield now and a para.ord... Any other recommendations?

Reliable and affordable. I have Ruger SR1911 that I bought about 2 years ago. I have now put somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 rounds through mine. I shoot mostly reloads and have tried a number of mixes and the only issues I have had is when I have made the COL on the short side. I have had a couple of FTF's in about 500 rounds with the short rounds. I have since found out that 1911's like the cartridge on the longer side. The OEM magazines are not very good quality, typical of lower end guns in general. I have replaced mine with a variety of after market mags all of which work well. The guns shoots accurately and within the realm of 1911's I believe it is accurate and reliable. Looks good, handles well and works well. I have no intention of selling mine and I use it regularly. I also know a number of other people with the Ruger and they are all happy with it.

Here is my storyline.
Get a two tone Norc 1911 , thoroughly enjoy it, buy a top model colt, get rippedoff. Sell the colt and continue to thoroughly enjoy the norc, 45 ammo is depleted, switch down to 22lr

IRUNGUNS just got in the polymer witness 1911P for all you glock guys!
its $497 USD it will be interesting to see what they will be once we get them here. i'm still waiting for the ATI polymer gun.

It would require effort to copy the plans and fit a slide

Lol......that's funny, anyhow..it wouldn't look like a 1911..a glock with a hammer...too funny.
.....I'm voting Sti....after Cz, it's my second fave brand....
