If you were to build a 416 what case would you use for a close to mid range thumper? I was really leaning towards the Taylor but someone posted of a 416/2". Now I've been thinking Going the wildcat route. The primary purpose would be bear over bait and to fill the gap between 35 and 45 calibers

Go big or stay home, a .416 Ultra, Rigby or Weatherby, a 350 gr bullet with a MV between 2800 and 3000 fps will resolve any problem you encounter. I nice midsize .416 round for a standard length action is the Ruger version.
Wildcatting a 416 is recoil painful and component expensive if you need to fire form brass.
I would find a .416 5 contour ss barrel, chamber it in 416 ruger, cut it at 21" and put it on your favorite long action magnum bolt face rifle for a "custom" 416 Ruger. That would be plenty cool without wildcatting. Or even a 416 Rem. Nothing wrong with them.

Hey there BB.............I built a 375 on the 350 RM case once and was always going to do a 416 on it as well. You might want to give that a try in a short action, super efficient, the 375/350 gave me 2700 fps from an 18" barrel with 270s, only expecting 2600 with 260s.
I bought a 416 Taylor from my late Brother's estate mainly because I fell in love with the rifle itself.
It seems to be a very accurate cartridge and very easy to work with, hopefully I can take it hunting one day.
He killed his first Yukon Bison with it so I'm sure that its a capable round..

I shot my Cape buffalo with a 416 Taylor.........made him dead, sort of..........after 9 good hits..........I'll never use solids on a buff again, could of killed him just as dead and a lot faster with my 300 Wby and 200 Parts. But the Taylor was a joy to hunt with and much flatter than the 458 and hitting just as hard with 400 gnrs @ 2400 fps.
I happen to have a 416 SS barrel in my hoard, maybe I'll still have to build a 416/350 RM, I also have a shortened 98 Mauser action, done by Bevan years ago when he and another gentleman were cutting actions and making long magnum 98s and ending up with several halves, that when put together made some cute little short 98s...........HHHMMMMMMMM. I'll add that to my list, after my 375 Ruger tests and my 23 cal project and, and, and, and.......................

Rigby. For no more practical reason than because.
As much as I love the big Rigby I think I want a smaller case. If i went with the Rigby I'd want it in a nice classy rifle. I'm looking for something different I can drag thru the bush and not care if it gets bug spray on it. Now that Ontario has a spring bear hunt and I should be getting a sizable tax return I think it's time for a new man toy

I have to agree with Jeff. Whatever you build you have to find components to feed it. The larger 416's are really designed for African game. The 416 Rem can be loaded down to 416 Taylor ballistics and used as a short range thumper at home. Same for the 416 Ruger. Yet if you get a chance to go to Africa you already have the rifle, just start loading it to max.
Ya but if I'm not mistaken he already has a 458 Win, so heavies in Africa is already covered. It seems to me that he is looking for a "45-70" kinda 416, not all hellfire and brimstone but a more sedate 100 mtr sorta cartridge. Like he said to use in a stand or as we out west here call them a "ditch" gun. Lots of whack for them 50 mtr black bears and such, the kind of work I use my 350 RM for, but exactly what I built my 375/350 for and a perfect application for the 416/350 RM. If I understand the original post correctly..............

They experimented with 338 and higher, discovered that 8mm was the upper practical limit for the WSM case......and came out with the 325 WSM.
Apparently the premise of improving on existing calibers hits the wall at 8mm because the projectiles take powder space, making them wimpy. So a 416 WSM would probably be sub 2000 f/sec.
Exactly right. I'll take my 458wm and a 300 Wm to Africa. I'm just wanting 40 ish caliber rifle and it will be used solely for black bears or the odd chance an Ontario moose
