What would you target/hunt with ?

Hey
target shooting and overall plinking ruger 10/22
I have two first one was just wood stock and used it as learning for building on to see what I liked and what felt good. then got stainless and currently work in progress , took it out today infact for a little water melon shooting in the back.

Plinking? Whatever you feel like. Hunting? The bolt action. Personally, I'd probably pick a Marlin XT or even a Ruger American bolt action before the Savage Mark II. (in that price range)

Just personal opinion ? Why bolt over semi for hunting ? I know its not a varmint apocalypse but just because bolts tend to be more accurate? Why marlin or ruger over savage?

Hey Ck~definitely my personal opinion, but I've had lots of rimfires come and go over the years too. So maybe a little experience too. :) Bolt guns are more accurate, the triggers are almost always better (lighter always, less creep usually) and the action is solid. Semi 22s are blowback, so part of the energy from the shot going off cycles the action. That will always mean some accuracy is lost, no matter what semi you're talking about. However, among semis...some are better than others (I've had plenty) and I'm down to 2 of them~both Marlin 795s with tuned triggers. Still, they don't touch the accuracy of my bolt guns.

I've been a Savage centerfire fan for some time, and just bought my second new one a few weeks back~a Model 10 Predator in .243. I gave Savage rimfires several chances over the years, and have owned 2 heavy barrel HMRs, 2 x .22 rifles, and a model 93 heavy barrel in 22WMR. All that remains is the Savage Rascal my kids have basically outgrown...but still like to shoot...so it stays. QC was never great on these guns, and has only gotten worse in my experience. I've had guns with terribly rough machining, faulty mags, crooked scope bases, damaged crowns, and so on. With this deteriorating QC came increasing prices...so I simply had enough. Most were accurate, I'll give them that...but no more taking chances on mail-order rifles I can't inspect first. Not dismissing them forever, just no temptation to add another any time soon. The Ruger American, while I have no experience shooting them...appears to be a fine example of what a budget-rimfire can be, and while my own 10/22 experiences have been lack-luster (to put it mildly) the 10 round rotary mag that feeds it is superb. The Marlin XTs are around $75+$100 less than a Ruger American (depending on what you pick) and while they aren't quite as nice as the RAR's, they're likely every bit as accurate. Maybe even more, depending on who you ask.

Bottom line for me~hunting means being as accurate as you can be, so picking rifle that has a mediocre track record for accuracy (10/22) at the beginning seems counterintuitive.

Again, just my opinion. Everyone has 'em. :)

Target and hunting I use my Savage MKII. It shoots 0.6ish at 50 yards and the trigger (work done) is sweet and the action is very smooth.

For plinking and child like fun with a rimfire? Semi all the way.

JMHO, but buy the most accurate gun you can. A 22 will last a couple lifetimes. Get one you grandkids will be glad to shoot. Most of us drop a grand for a hunting gun that might see a hundred rounds, a 22 will see thousands. Why cheep out? Look at better guns. This is only my view and might not be applicable to you. Good luck.

For years I target shot and hunted with a Ruger M77 Heavy barrel varmint rifle in .308. Sure it's a heavy rifle, but I cut my teeth hunting with a full military configuration No.4 Lee Enfield so the weight didn't bother me. I did find that heavy barrel made for a seriously stable hunting platform and it got me kudos at the range as well as putting a lot of venison on the table over the years. I'm talking about the old Rugers mind you, with the walnut stock and tang safety, not the new stainless dedicated target rifles. When you posted your original thread, you didn't mention if you were looking at small bore or big bore as a "do-all" rifle.

Go with the Canadian made Savage Mark II. I have the heavy target barrel and with a 4x scope I do 2-3" groupings with Remington bucket ammo.
Stay away from the Winchester ammo as the rim is about 1mm smaller than the rest resulting in extraction issues.

What flavour are you going to get? You may find a couple of standard barrel ones on the shelf but if you want a heavy barrel or the FVT with the target sights, they may have to order it in. Mine is the FVT so I have the target aperture sight with a long sight line wand the scope mounts with a 4x-9x scope on it for my bad eyes. I usually stay on the 4x setting and I have played with and adjusted the parallax to 100 yds for the range I shoot at.

Honestly the Ruger American is a SUPERB rimfire for the price and what you can do with them, you get two cheek weld/stock inserts and it uses 10/22 mags and they are accurate, its the surprise gift Im giving my one friend after her PAL arrives, I got a Nikon 7x32 scope and the thing is gorgeous im almost upset I have to give it to her.

I get what you are saying. For less I can get a savage that shoots the same comes with a scope... Im going to be using bulk ammo mostly... IE why I wont go buy a CZ lol If I get a high quality rifle I cant feed it junk ! lol Im looking for something with respectable accuracy and will be a great bang for my buck.
