Hey gang. I'm in the market for a tree stand, and looking for suggestions.

1. I'm 6'4" and 265lbs.

2. I'm partial to self climbers for there portability.

3. I'm a new dad and diaper poor.

So hit me with your suggestions. Bonus life points for links to products and videos!

Thanks!!

KJ

Watching this one. Self climbers are generally heavy, and one for your weight is going to be hard to find. Years ago, I was the same weight as you, I'm still not light. I was younger then, and hunted mostly from the ground, or home made wooden stands.

Two person ladder stands was going to be my suggestion. On sale, they are cheap, probably cheaper than the climber that will carry you. They are also a lot easier, and quieter to get in and out of, once they are set up.

I'm about your size and use a Summit Goliath. They are expensive but well worth the money and comfortable for those of us that take up a lot of space. Try one out, you won't be disappointed.

I am 6' and 230 and I use a Lone Wolf Sit & Climb Wide and its awesome. I like having a very portable stand and this folds up and carries like a backpack. It is pretty much the most expensive stand out there but I will have it forever. Its rated to 350lbs. Any good stand will cost $$$ so pony up and get the right one the first time. I like Lone Wolf products, they are well designed and extremely well made. Summits are nice also, but they still felt huge in comparison.

The Lone Wolf is very well built, I'm 6'2" and 270 lbs, I would not hesitate for a second to sit in a Lone Wolf climber (provided the tree looks sturdy ;)). Neighbour has owned one for years now and swears he would never buy anything else.

A slightly (but not that much) cheaper might be something from Summit. They have a couple *ahem* larger gentleman models. Cabela's was selling them....not sure if they're still carrying the line. But they seem really well put together and comfortable.

I bought and set up a two person ladder stand for this past fall. I'm a little smaller at 5'11" and 235lbs however I can't see me being comfortable in a single seater, especially with gear on. Had plenty of room for just me and my rifle! I think I paid around $250 for it. Buy some extra tie down straps to use as well.

I am 6 foot and 210..... No issues with singles...... But I used a dual at camp and must admit it was nice.....

Lone Wolf Wide Sit & Climb Combo II Climbing Tree Stand https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004XNYZJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awd_uABKwbV9XJ3M9

$600 buys a lot of diapers...

Diapers are a huge draw on the budget. So glad the kids are out of them. Does it need to be portable or do you have a spot in mind? $600 will buy alot of lumber/cordage and screws/lags...

I agree.... Been there done that....

But again, how portable is "portable"....... Have had no issues moving a ladder stand as much as a kilometer through the woods..... In pieces of course......

That being said, rearranging my setup is a way for me to stave off cabin fever, I and I realize this may not be for everyone.....but it sure has paid dividends.....

I am with the others.... How much "portability" do you need?

Well, the same two critters that keep me diaper poor, also keep my hunting days very sporadic. The best laid plans get laid to waste. So I like the idea of something I can take in and out as I come and go.

The best thing about them is the ease of which you can shoot behind the tree you're sitting in. It's really difficult to do anything past 180 degrees left-right in one of my single ladder stands....

Understood..... And afraid of heights here..... So my solution is a no go....

But a decent pop up blind is another option and I use them often......

Im 6' 4" and used to go around 250 when I first got into bow hunting. I think how you plan to hunt from the stand is as important as the stand itself. I have one of the first lone climbers. Its a ##### to use with size 15 boots, and the seat it too narrow and too close to the tree. My feet take up the whole foot platform. Rotating side to side while standing is near impossible. If you have to go full draw, youre so close to the tree that your rear elbow ends up in the trunk, so you have to lean awkwardly while at draw when bow hunting. Shotgun or rifle from the seated position is fine, but as soon as you have to stand and turn, your big clown feet cause problems.
Wanna buy it? lol
Mind you, I've shot a pile of deer from it, but youve got to be extra cautious in how you use it.
I love my home made 4'x4' platforms built on skids and chained up to the tree.

I have a buddy that's a big dude, and he uses a tree harness. It like a giant diaper that you strap to the tree. Super comfortable, and no worries about falling.

Cheers

Hmmm. Noted. I messed my back up 10 or so years ago by twisting around backwards around the base of a tree I was sitting at to shoot a deer that snuck up directly behind me. Only a .308, but the recoil in that position... yowzer. Woulda been extra bad if I'd had to hobble down from a tree stand with my back hurting like that.

Any suggestions for brand, etc. ? I looked at a few that advertised themselves as being tall enough to stand in. Not for this guy. And definitely not with a drawn bow.

There was a time when people used cloth diapers and washed them. You could save alot towards your stand that way. I am only 52 and though I never had any kids of my own I can remember changing relatives little ones and putting the cloth diapers in a diaper pail to be washed.

Lol, thanks :)

The diapers are just a euphemism for all the money that drains into the kiddos. Resps, sitters, car seats, clothes they outgrow before even wearing them, and food. Ugh, the food. One's allergic to cows milk protein, the other to eggs, and the wife gluten. I live in a milk/butter/cheese/chocolate/egg/mayo/bread/taste free home. I feel like we're a bunch of hippie vegans. Vegan carnivores, mind you. :p All this hippie taste-free granola crap costs a small fortune!

Hah! Salesman of the year right here folks!

I truly appreciate the review. :)

So KJ I guess its some sort of out of the box version eh?

Well... Yeah it's kinda looking that way Cam. The main spot I want to set up in is a little over a km from where I can drive to, and there's no trails at all. So it would be quite a bugger to lug skids or lumber back there though thick bush the whole way. It's not my property, so I don't know how the owner would feel about me felling a few small trees to use as lumber.

Maybe a decent ground blind would be a compromise.

Hmmm... :-/
