My 870 story

I think the shell is getting lodged/stuck in the chamber. These 870 express have terrible unpolished chambers. Using cheap ammo (low metal, aluminum base) will do that. This tends to happen when the gun warms up and the chamber swells, and is warm enough to slightly swell the cheap shell.
Seems to me the extractor is working fine. My 0.02 c.

First off, sorry to hear of the passing of your buddy!
The Family are pretty dam cool to have passed the gun along to you.
From the pictures of the ammo you use it is 99.99 % the hulls getting stuck in the chamber do to lack of final finishing .
A quick polish should take care if this and I am sure it will resolve the issue.
There are countless you tube vids on how to polish the chamber with a ten inch wood dowel and some emery paper 400 grit will do nicely.
Then again someone with more talent than I will be able to find a thread where an ingenious CGN nutter has already done a how to with the tools I mentioned.
I have not heard of any Wingmasters having this issue, but there is always a first.
If you where close to the lowermainland I would stop by and show you the quick fix for this common issue.
Rob

*** the issue with the video posted is the guy saying that this guns from Walmart and other stores are seconds.
There is no way in he double hockey sticks that Walmart would sell a gun as a second.***

Firstly Thank you to everyone everyone for your great positive input, your knowledge is greatly appreciated. Secondly I'm going to try the chamber polish plan this week, hopefully it resolves my issue. I'll keep you all posted about my progress and wether this works or not.

I had the same issue as you and first thing I did was switching ejectors... Didnt work !
Then I polished my chamber, problem solved !

Winchester 12ga bull pack ammo is junk and caused most issues in my case but low "metal" shell tend to do that once in a while. No probs whatsoever with high brass shell (slugs&buckshot)

The ejector nose is broken off and your gun will not function properly until the ejector is replaced.
The ejector nose holds the barrel in correct alignment for proper function.

THIS.

I saw it right away in the pics, read through all the posts, was getting ready to type it, then saw Smoji beat me to it. Ejector tip is sheared. It needs a new ejector assembly.

This is a gunsmith only job - take it to a smith.

Not too difficult. You'll need a set of job specific punches. You should be able to land them from Brownells for about $65.00. Parts would be another $50 or so.
Depending on your location, a gunsmith would likely do the whole job, parts and all, for between $75 and $100.00.

In other words, unless you plan on doing this job a couple times (you should not need to), just bring it to a smith - cheaper than buying the tooling (870 Ejector spring rivet cutter and a REMINGTON 870 RIVET STAKING TOOL SET, Brownells has them).

I've done this job in the past. Not hard if you have the right tool and punches, BUT, the rivets will stand proud of the receiver when done and need to be filed flush. Normally doing an ejector replacement also requires the receiver to be refinished (re-blued) unless you don't care what it looks like. Then you can just slap some cold blue to it.

You will need a front and rear rivet (about $7 US each), the ejector (about $20 US) and the spring ($8 US). Then there is the labour...

No experience with the Rio shells but the Winchester is the typical cheap crap that seems to cause all kinds of extraction issues in the 870 express guns . Polish the chamber this will pretty much solve the extraction issue .

Looks like I'll have to take it to see a smith then boys..after he's done I'll give the chamber a good scrub and hopefully she's ready for another 10 years of play.

Smoji is correct about the ejector nose my friends express did the exact same thing had it changed by our local gunsmith and he was done. I figured as much when you said you could get the action about half way open if it is a hull issue its tough to even get the action open at all.

Imho I wouldn't play with anything else on the gun or with the ammo if you've used it that way for years no need to. Its just a faulty part and unfortunately it happens. Sorry about your friend, glad to hear you have something of his to cherish.

You don't need to go to a gunsmith to change the extractor. Buy the impossible to find machined steel extractor, plunger and spring from onlinecamp.tv which is a division of Gravel Agency. (sponsor)
No need to even remove the bolt. Use a small precision screwdriver to compress the plunger and spring, then pick the extractor out. The spare plunger and spring are for when the originals go *sproing* and disappear when you're installing the new extractor. This whole process shouldn't take more than about 5 minutes.
