Help with sale gone sour???

Short story.... I sold a used rifle the buyer has had for over a month now and I don't know what has been done to it.. The buyer says he want's a full refund because the serial number appears to be tampered with... I have never tampered with a serial number ever. I think it's a safe ding or bad stamping from savage ... What should I do with this situation please help???

If you provided pictures and this alleged serial number thing/damage was in the pics then he would have saw it before purchase and that's on him. Also if you know you didn't tamper with any numbers or anything then you're good IMHO. Also over a month is a little excessive for a refund. I would gladly refund anything within a week but over a month no thanks. A week is more than enough to inspect the firearm thoroughly , even a complete strip if desired and a guy should be able to fire it within a week if he's worried about or questions its functionality.
Just my opinion , YMMV.
 
Since tampering with a firearms serial number is a criminal offence. I typically end any convesrsation when people accuse me.
 
How would ya know the buyer didn't do it? Whats a reasonable time from to inspect a firearm and know if you want a refund? 1-2 days tops....
 
If your sure the marks were not there before you shipped it, I'd say its his after a month. How could you be sure he didn't switch the gun with another, all he has to do is change the wood.
 
If he has had it this long I would say don't think twice about it. It's his. He can complain all he wants. I wouldn't trust the guy. It sounds fishy to me.
 
Do you have a picture of the serial number on the firearm in question? That would put a quick end to the buyers claim...

And, as others said, mucking with a serial number on a firearm is a criminal offence...

I have to side with you on this one. I've bought and sold a fair number of firearms and such on this site. I've only had a couple of questionable sellers who may have screwed me either out of ignorance or intent, but how do you prove it? Personally, if I get a firearm off this site, it's in pieces within a day or less and thoroughly inspected. A month? No way! If he's had it that long, it's his. Without actually seeing the firearm or hearing his side, it sounds like buyers remorse to me. Either he's changed his mind (too bad), the Christmas bills have come in, or his significant other is hassling him over the purchase, maybe.
 
There's a reason buyers only have a month from time of purchase to leave negative feedback..... That's more than enough time to receive and inspect a firearm..... Usually I am more than happy to refund a purchase if a buyer is not satisfied, but in a case like this one, you have no idea what he may have done to the gun...... You are well within your rights to refuse his request...

First off gun is a Savage BVSS in 22-250. There was 2 pictures from far away provided. I have never though of asking for serial number pictures as I don't assume they are messed with.

I got the gun and really didn't look at it as it just went in the safe. I had no bases or even a scope for the rifle.

I literally just got my Millet one piece base in the mail after all the Christmas and new years crap and went to install it. Doing this forced me to look closely at the gun.

What this appears to be is the gun was stamped a 6 and someone tried to make it a 8. I Mainly bought this gun to use the action for a build. I could not resist the $500 price tag for a Stainless BVss with 200 rounds fired that used to be his buddies.

Should I Also mention the fact the seller didn't ask for my pal and just sold and shipped me the rifle?

I went to sfrc Thursday and bought over $200 worth of 22-250 ammo, dies, etc and that doesn't include the Milled mount I ordered. I have a brand new Sightron S3 8-32-56 coming tomorrow from Prohet river that was going to go on this gun. I spent a ton to figure out the serial number looks suspect once I finally got to installing everything.

Have a look at the picture and tell me if this is a safe kiss or bad stamping like the seller says it might be. Would you want to return a $1200 gun you bought for $500? I really want to keep the gun as I wanted the stainless action for my build but I don't want to be stuck with this action.

I even told the seller if he can get me a recipt showing this serial number I'm fine.. I mean he said his buddy was the original owner right?

First off, the seller is technically not required to ask for your PAL..... The letter of the law states that he only has to not have reasonable doubt that you have one....

Secondly, as the buyer, you had every right to ask for whatever pics you wanted, going back now and complaining that he only sent far away pictures is lame.....

Thirdly, that looks like a bad stamp to me, not like tampering, and if you truly want to keep the rifle, simply call the cfo's office and verify the serial number against the rifle..... Easy peezy

Bottom line, you didn't ask for more pics, you didn't take any time to inspect your purchase and ask for a refund in a timely manner, and now you are unhappy a full month later and want a refund?
 
Honestly? It looks to me like a poor factory stamp. Not that I ever would even consider it, but IF was trying to stamp a firearm with intent to deceive, I'm be a damned sight more careful to make it LOOK authentic. Thank you for your side of the story.
 
So the gun is fine except for this stamp issue right? Still functions fine and fit and finish are good other than the bad stamp or stamp over? It's definetly not a safe ding that's for sure , could be a factory error or over stamp at the factory, it's well within the realm of possibility. With all due respect to you I still stand by thoughts that a month or more is too long to ask for a refund. Anything I buy I inspect, due dilligence plain and simple. Also it's not like the number is hidden or needs a strip to see , it's right there for you to see right away on mild inspection.
 
Savage is pretty notorious for s#itty stamping. I have a rimfire that has a barely legible s/n

You would think an error like that would be the first or last digit, not one in the middle. Strange.

I have no idea if the gun functions fine. I just got enuff stuff to try it 2 days ago and saw the issue. I know now to go over things with a fine tooth comb as soon as I get it. Maybe you guy don't have a slightly darker basement where you keep/unpack your guns so you don't get #### from your wife..

Would the factory really cover a 6 with a 8? When someone sells you a gun without asking for a pal and you discover a serial number that's not 100 percent do you trust them?

I did not turn to the forum with this but I will defend my position.

When I deal with people with good ratings I assume I don't have to go over things as much and a quick look is enuff. Call me old fashioned.

That looks suspicious as hell to me. The original number looks like it was a 6 and then the 8 was stamped over, apparently with a hand stamp. I do not like it, not one little bit.
 
You could have him send it back on his dime thoroughly inspect it and if it's in the same condition and functions well you perhaps could refund his money not before..

not only does it look suspicious because of that, all the other #s are electro stencilled and NOT stamped. the done over # is stamped only.

NONE of those #s are stamped, call up the RCMP and request that the serial # be run through their system for being stolen. give them both the # with a 6 and an 8. the electro # covered up is a 6.
