Any tips for reloading 38/357 for both a revolver and a carbine? Is it just a pipe dream to be able to have decently accurate, interchangeable loads or would it be advisable to test out seperate loads for each firearm. S&W 686 and a Rossi M92 are the firearms in question.
I don't have the Rossi yet (this week) and I have heard fixed reviews on running 38s in a 357 carbine but
It would be nice to have some decent loads I can use in both.
I've got some good loads worked up for some 158gr LSWC and 125gr JHP so far.

Thanks for any tips and tricks from someone who has been there before!

If you already have loads for the pistol, try them in the rifle. My 38 rifle load is a 130 gr lead bullet, but 158 seem to work just as well. Mine will cycle anything but full wadcutters. 357 125 JHP will probably do 2200 fps or so and don't drop much past 100 yards. Full magnums with plain base 158 might be too fast. You try it and tell me.

My 158gr LSWC 38spl loads shot good in my Freedom arms handgun, but they sprayed an 8" pattern at 50 yards in my Rossi. My 158gr XTP 357mag loads shoot 1" at 50 yards in the Rossi, and good in my Freedom Arms handgun.

What shoots well in my ruger does not do well in my Marlin 1894. I tried a ton of loads in the rifle and generally only jacketed shot worth a damn. But theyre too expensive sooo. Best cheaper load that worked in both was a .357 load, a 158gr Campro plated SWC in front of 6.0gr of titegroup with a regular small pistol primer. Does around 1235 fps in the 18.5" Marlin. havent chronoed the revolver yet but I'm guessin just over a 1000.

My rossi 92 wouldn't cycle hand loaded semi wadcutters or round nose flat point until I seated the bullet long to 357 length. Anything else I've tried so far has worked though.

I have the Rossi and it is a great little carbine. I decided early on to only shoot .357 cases in the gun, Cleaning out the inevitable ring from using 38spl is a pain in revolver but worse in a rifle. The '92 is not an easy gun to keep clean, unlike the Marlin where you can access the barrel via the chamber without taking apart the gun.

I have a 200 gr mold that is a killer bullet out of the Rossi using 357 cases.

Take Care

I use 7.8 gr of vv n350 under a bullet barn 158 grain rnfp. In a. 357 case with cci sp primers. My chiappa m92 loves this. My friend said they are accurate in his ruger Blackhawk as well. This load is sort of a light mag. Low muzzle blast from his ruger and clean burning
