Sako 85 Kodiak (375H&H). Have one, used one, thoughts?

I haven't handled that particular sako, mine is a finnlight. But sako vs mossberg there is on comparison in quality however the price reflects this. Not that mossberg makes bad guns but it sounds like if you went mossberg you would regret it and long for a sako. I would save up for the sako if I were you. It's January and hunting season is still months away to save.

Sako is much more highly regarded than Mossberg, and of course the price tag reflects that.

Although I recently bought a Mossberg Patrol .223, simply because it used AR magazines, and the rifle is accurate and functions well.

what is the intention behind the rifle? a tool or a gun with a name on it?

did you look up on vanguard s2?

It will replace my 30-06 as an everyday hunter. I haven't looked at the Vanguard but will. I'm quite partial to a shorter barrel and detachable mag. Stainless synthetic works best for the hunting I do. A good bit of bushwalking in snow/rain etc. I admire nice wood furniture, but my hunting style would be hard on it and seeing it worn would bother me. The Sako just felt perfect in my hands.

I have a Finnlight in 243, Bavarian in 30-06 and Kodiak in 375 H&H. I have 15 other rifles....Kimber, Winchester, Marlin, Browning etc. The Sakos are the ones I take hunting. Just my 2 cents.

CZ!

A rifle with chambers of 375 or bigger has to be CRF. If one only use it on paper, at a range, then it matters not.

Not necessarily, I have had a couple CRFs in 375 that wouldn't cycle properly.
I'd rather have a push feed that is dependable than a CRF that isn't, just my thoughts...

The Sako is well balanced, not too heavy for a .375 like a lot of rifles (Ruger RSM, Brno), freakishly accurate, stainless, excellent trigger and typical Sako fit and finish. You can't go wrong.

I did a bit of a double take when I read the choice was a Mossberg or a Sako.

I have owned 6 different Sako rifles, all were great, all were more than double the cost of a Mossberg anything and all functioned pretty much flawlessly.

Seemed like a strange question. If it was me looking for a 375 in a Sako, I would probably be looking back a bit a find a nice AV.

I handled the Sako Kodiak a little while ago, as anything stainless with iron sights interests me. I tried a dummy round in it and found that it does grab the shell but pretty late. I was not impressed with the "express" style sights and short 21" barrel.
These short barrel .375's must be a handful to practice with compared to an '06 with a 22" or 24"barrel? no?

The Ruger is $1500 or so now, and the lack of detachable mag is a no go for me when spending that much. $800ish more gets the Sako. I carry a hunting rifle many more hours than I shoot it. The max 44 mag revolver loads don't bother me, so I doubt muzzle blast will be an issue. I would mount an optic that I already own. I notice the only repeated criticism of the Sako is cost.

Used both the Kodiak and the Bavarian in 375. Both shot very well, under an inch, even with the heavier loads. I liked the idea of the shorter barrel on the Kodiak, but preferred the handling or point and swing of the longer barreled Bavarian. I liked the look of the Bavarian stock, but it was a pig to shoot and I wanted to add a scope so the hogs back had too low of a comb for any optics. I liked the feel and dimensions on the Kodiak stock. So, I combined the barreled action from the Bavarian with the laminate from the Kodiak, but upgraded the recoil pad to a Limbsaver Grind-to-fit.

Both are great rifles and the 375 is a cool cartridge.

Really ? If the Ruger is $ 1500 now then its severely overpriced !!
The 375 Alaskan I had lacked only two things..... proper function and a total lack of quality control, was I ever glad to see it go in spite of a financial beating.
I now have a Howa 1500 stainless 20 " in 375 Ruger and I love it as its everything I wish my Ruger should have been.
