Hey,

So Ive lucked out and joined the Tavor club. Have yet to take it out but i have a few questions:

1.) The 2 o'clock rail is loose. Its got the forward to backwards play as typically reported. What are people replacing it with for a metal rail? MLOK? Metal picatinny?

2.) Not a huge fan of these rail mounted BUIS. Who makes them? What are they worth? I slipped them off and threw on some magpul BUIS. They allign nicer but it still feels redundant since there is a BUIS built in. How are they for quality/accuracy? Im thinking i may take the magpul off and put my trust in the built in rail ones (Im assuming thr IDF rely on these same BUIS in the field)

3.) What optics are guys recommending? I run aimpoints on my AR's. I was thinking of running another aimpoint. However, this is a bush gun. Maybe i should go with a magnified optic? Maybe something cool in 1-4? I was thinking maybe Elcan spectre or something from the 5.56 line of some nice scopes. Something cool like the Leupold mk4 cq/t.

While im a fan of red dots on ranges and courses i think i need something more balanced for crown land.

Mine is on it's way, too! ALso looking at optics. The Vortex Razor 1-6 illuminated reticle 30mm tube looks about perfect but ti's also very $$$$$

That position rail is pretty much only good for things like a light that don't require a zero. If you're really worried about the play, you can probably make a shim. I don't know if anyone makes rails compatible with that slot.

I pulled off my BUIS and replaced it with nothing. I sold them fast for about $50 on the EE. The integral sights are perfect for what they are: Backup sights. You can zero for both windage and elevation with the front sight. They've got a short sight radius so they're not going to be suberb for tight groups, but they'll land hits just fine if your optic fails.

I had an aimpoint pro mounted on mine. It worked fine, but the Tavor is a very "tall" gun, with a high center of gravity. The high-mounted aimpoint just made it more so. Red dots where the weight is distributed lower, like the EOTech feel more natural. I've got a Meprolight M5 on mine. Feels like it as made for the Tavor. Haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet so I can't tell you how good it really is.

The only short rail replacement I know of is the Midwest industries and as mentioned it really isn't meant for anything zero critical. M-lok or keymod only really would depend on what you want to bolt to it.

The backup sights have varied over time and generally are just average quality backup sights.

Optics... I think the elcan is pretty kickass. I have a borrowed elcan right now, an eotech, an aimpoint, and a few scopes. I have an elcan on the way, and I think the bullpup really mitigates the weight. I also think you want something that has a true 1x. Just my opinion tho.

Currently my setup is:

Geissele Lightning Bow
Geissele trigger
Gear Head Works short razorback
Gear Head Works TMF Scout forend
Manticore buttpad
Manticore Luma safeties
Elcan 1-4

I have no backup sights, debating if the fixed emergency sights on the elcan are satisfactory or not. If you run the factory rail the sights in it seem good enough for the very rare circumstances in which you might need em.

I also have a Arisaka scout light, Malkoff head, and Surefire pressure switch.

I intend to get a Gear Head Works folding charging handle eventually, and if I need backup sights I'll use their front flip up.

This gun has been a black hole of money, but I'm still super happy with it.

Hehe imagine that, an Israeli optic that feels designed for an Israeli firearm

After I tried mounting a light to the 2 o'clock rail, I came to the conclusion it was pointless and simply removed the rail. It's just an awkward place and seemed to increase the added bulk of adding anything to that rail.

I think I sold my factory BUIS for 100-150, I don't recall exactly. I'm all for redundancy (optic & irons) but 2 sets of irons seems pointless.

I ran my comp ML3 on it once but youre right, red dots just don't seem right on the tavor. Like most, I normally run a Spectre 1-4 on mine but have recently swapped that to my SBR so im going to try it with my ACOG 4x before looking at a permanent replacement. . If anything else, I'd try something like a 1-4x or 1-6 vortex scope, definitley something on the lower magnification. The Spectre is a great optic but it's excessively pricey.

Only other part I recommend is a gear head works flex swivel mount. I didn't really care for the extra single point, but it seems to eliminate extra gases leaking out of the cheap cover and blasting your eyes.

Thanks guys.

Good to know about the Gas cover, who supplies gear head works?

I may consider the Trijicon or maybe a vortex. When i was in the shop i compared the vortex to the spectre...bad move once you have enjoyed the higher quality glass. However the price is a major obstacle.

1) I ditched it. Bulky and ugly, makes the Tav as wide as it is tall with a Surefire on it... lol
2) I have sold a couple sets, $100 is the high end of what I was able to get, $75 the low end. They are alright and have a tritium fron post but so do your built in rail ones.
3) Elcan Specter DR 1/4x all the way in my opinion, but I am an Elcan Specter whore. Put that #### on everything!

I ordered mine through zahal a site sponser.
Another thing to keep in mind, the tavor isn't an AR15. It's not exactly designed for massive rails, lights, lasers and all The other good stuff. It's a pretty solid gun out of the box.

Yea i usually run a x300 ultra on pistols and rifles. But i wont be on the tavor. Seems the under barrel mount is most streamlined.

I haven't even fired mine yet but m sure looking forward to it!

1: yes my 2 o click rail is loose if I force it.

2: buis are what they are. Back up sights. The height puts them right in the middle of my mepro m21. They are adjustable. No idea on the price.

3: I added a Mepro m21 and a Mepro x3 for optics. I figured I might as well add what was designed for it. And it simply looks awesome

I bought one and they suck for left handers. The brass hitting your chin will draw blood in short order. Nice gun other than that.
