Advice on a .270 rifle.

Before making your decision, PM C-FBMI and ask for his recommendations of the best .270 rifle. He will provide you with information that is otherwise unobtainable, in the most colorful fashion imaginable, and will ensure that you will make the best possible choice. And be sure to mention Jack O'Conner!

Oh, I would love to be a fly on the wall just to hear the comments !

I have been intrigued with the .270 cartridge for some time, so I finally ordered one - a Steyr Prohunter with a Nikon Monarch 3. Should be here in a week or so. I realized a while ago - buy once, cry once - so get what you want and enjoy shooting it for years to come. Most guns that go into my safe never leave to another home.

the week end started well Mike ....

Well OP, so much for not breaking the bank lol. I think given the fact you mentioned the axis and trophy hunter as a reference, the majority of what's been suggested is just a tad out of your intended price range. Btw, don't let anyone sway you from the .270. It's a great caliber.

He and I have had that conversation on the phone a few times... It's hilarious, really... If you drill him down really hard about it, he decided that he had to have a caliber to hate, disliked Jack O'Connor on a personal level, decided that without Jack the .277 bore cartridges would have died off, and picked it to have a hate on for... The 0.3mm that the .277 bullet is larger in diameter is very important to him...

I've been thinking of asking him to put together a 27 Nosler for me....

Whatever can be said about C-FBMI, he knows his guns, and has access to information and research on guns and cartridge development not available to the general public...

There's a really nice CZ 550 American in 270 win for sale in the EE.

Ah yes the 270 WCF what a great cartridge. Easy to shoot easy to find and inexpensive to feed.
I have seen a couple Winchester push feed Featherweights in last two weeks that would make a great beginning rifle.
Myself I am also looking to get back into the 270 club and the Kimber would be a great rifle.
OP you should start with the 270 that fits you the best, the one that you are comfortable to hold and shoot it till you wear it out.

My, my............I seem to be getting a lot of press on a thread I would not generally even peruse............I personally have no use for any cartridge with a .277 bore, but that's just me, why anyone would choose such a cartridge when there are so many better is also beyond my grasp. Even Eleanor had better sense and shunned the 270 in favor of the 7X57, with which she killed at least as many animals as Ol' JOC did with his God forsaken 270...........I'm starting to rant again...............:p:p:p

If the OP wants a 270, with which to shoot deer, then that is his God given right and far be it from me to attempt to dissuade him..........even if he is terribly misguided and there are 30 better cartridges out there, I can think of right off the top of my head!!!! As to the platform in which to use this "spawn of Satan" cartridge..........forget all Salvages, Ruger Americans and Rem 783s and get yourself a nice rifle that you would be proud to own and show to your friends, especially after you come to your senses and get it rebarreled to a REAL hunting cartridge.

I looked long and hard at the model 70 JOC tribute rifle, it is truly a work of art and a beautiful firearm. I of course would get Mr. Smith to rebore it to 7mm but I already have a 7X64 and a 280 Rem as well as a 7X57 and 7 Mag, oh ya and a 7-08 and a 7 RUM.........so to spend 2.5K on a rifle just to duplicate what I already have, is just a waste of money..........but they are a beautiful rifle, if only they came in a different cartridge................:(:(:(

HHHHMMMMMMMM I can't believe I let you guys goad into posting on a thread about 270s........;):d:rolleyes:

Be patient and look for a good used .270 tikka, browning or Remington. Good value in buying a second hand rifle if you do your research.

...suppose it's a bad time to come out of the closet and say I really like the .270, eh?

You already did that... and there are only three reasonable explanations for it;

1. Excessive latent estrogen
2. The upper body strength of Bernadette Rostenkowski
3. Possession by Jack's ghost
