coyote caliber

what caliber do you all prefer for hunting coyotes .204 ruger or .223

I shoot 204, 223, and 22-250. Of the three, I think the 22-250 tends to be the hammer, the 223 the most versatile, and the 204 the most enjoyable. If we could legally use it here, I would probably shoot a 243 or perhaps just 95 gr Vmax out of my 6.5x55.

so .204 is good and .223 is good ok im thinking of getting both calibers

There are quite a few cartridges that are 'good to go' for coyotes. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages, depending on context. You won't go wrong with either of those mentioned.

Hi, do you reload? Tell us about where you're planning to hunt. Are you keeping the pelts?
If you reload and keep pelts 243 on down should be fine. Personally love the 204.

Is fur damage a concern? For flat out killing, you can't beat a 243 with a 70gr Nosler BT...what a hammer

I use a 223 now, but mainly because I have thousands of empty brass and it's a good cartridge to shoot the piss out of. 22-250 will bridge the gap between the 223 and 243. I've never used one on coyotes but it has a good track record

Took a cat this morning at 200-225 yards with the duece loaded with 52 grain sierras, bang flop, no exit wound. Perfect!!!! Now I don't have to attempt to patch a huge hole in the hide.

im hunting in alberta just outside Calgary area and yes I will like to keep the pelts and I do not reload right now but thinking about starting to reload

I would say 223 or 204. 22-250 and 243 are pretty comparable and would be on the high side. Instead of picking up two rifles maybe just get one. Try it for awhile and see if you like it. Nice thing about the 223 is brass and ammo availiabity. Practice ammo for the 223 is cheaper as well. A bad shot from any caliber will make a mess though.

As I stated in my above post the 204 is my current love. Lots of bang flops and very little fur damage. Your mileage may vary.

there's plenty of good ammo options for the 204, 223, 22-250 and 243 to fill any predator hunting need. If you're going to be shooting a lot, 223 would mke the most sense. If you're going to be reaching out 300+ yards then the '250 & 243 would have the edge. You'll probably find the 223 to be the best fur friendly option of the four, at least with factory ammo. Heard the 204 with Vmax can splash on bone, but does well with a handloaded 35gr Berger

With a .223 recoil is so manageable, you get to see the impact through the scope.

That's half the fun!! With the Nikon on top of the duece on 10x this morning I saw the impact in the back of its head and watched it drop, tail only twitched twice. Lol.

Love the rounds from 223 and under.
