I'm thinking about buying an SKS, but I'm not totally sold on them. My local gun store doesn't have any and the Crappy Tire doesn't sell guns. My options are Marstar and Tradeex. Does anyone have experience buying from these stores? Both stores offer "select grade" and very good condition refurbs. Would the SKSs they have in stock be the same for quality?

As well, I'm worried about shooting corrosive ammo. I have no experience with it and I'm afraid it might ruin the rifle.

Convince me to buy an SKS.

Had one for about 5 years now just a plain 53 izzy refurb with nice dark wood
shoot both corrosive and not ,i enjoy cleaning it after the corrosive personally
if you havent shot one yet just try one,it will convince you after the first 5 shots

If you are only going to buy one gun, swing down to the EE and pick yourself out one of weimajack's. More money than some but you get top quality. He had some cheaper refurbs if you want to go cheaper but still quality.

Definately get one. For the price at the moment you can't beat them. I educated myself on disassembly and reassembly by watching Youtube videos. Alot of great info on the net as well on these gems. I too was hesitant about corrosive ammo and only shot non corrosive for the first 200 rounds. Once you see how easy and enjoyable they are to take apart and put back together with you will feel the same. I got two from Weimjack and he is fanstastic to deal with. Don't be shy and send him a pm.

I've never dealt with Tradex, but Marstar is a pretty solid company. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an SKS from either of them. 'Select grade' can be kind of subjective, but any kind of decent refurb is well worth having...I have a couple of them and they are really about as good as new. Corrosive ammo is not a big deal...you just need to do a reasonable job of cleaning after shooting. The process has been described many times on this forum, and it takes only a little extra effort and some hot water to preserve your rifle indefinitely.

A quality NR centerfire rifle in the $200-250 price range is just an insanely good deal, esp. when there is still tons of cheap ammo available to shoot through them. I'll say again what many people are tired of hearing from us old guys: Forty years ago you could pick up great condition Lee-Enfields and Garands and Mausers and all kinds of wonderful surplus rifles for a song. Nowadays those great old rifles are comparatively rare and expensive, and lots of guys regularly kick themselves for not picking one up [or a dozen of them] back when they had the chance.

I recommend that you spend the pittance [comparatively] an SKS costs. Shoot it a bit, keep it clean and see what you think. If you just can't feel the thrill, you should easily get most of your money back by flipping it to somebody else.

A QUALITY RIFLE FOR $225 BUCKS!! HOLY CRAP!!! How can you lose?

Lots of good advice up there^^ (except from legiOn), You can't go wrong with any SKS you buy! Yes, some will look nicer,
Weimajack's unissued are great, and so are Corwin Arms in Kamloops (he will have some soon) but they all work about the same.:HFU:

They're a fantastic plinking rifle. I've bought 4 from Marstar with 100% satisfaction with both laminate and hardwood; select grade wasn't an option.

You'll enjoy it no matter where you get it.

you want a shooter or a keeper?
if you worry about corrosive ammo, buy one of those un-issued to fondle, then buy another cheapest SKS you can get your hands on, shoot the crap outta of it, hose and repeat.

Not sure why someone would need to be convinced to buy a $199 semi-auto rifle, which happens to shoot a .30 caliber round that is plentiful and inexpensive. You either enjoy shooting or you don't....pretty simple really. Everyone should have an SKS, IMO.

This... JP.

If you want a shooter, buy a shooter, the cheapest one you can find, remember if you buy on line, you will pay around $35 ish for shipping, buy at least a crate of ammo too, as some have said, prices may rise a bit this year, it may even take these rifles out of the realm of cheap fun shooting!!

Get the 249 "super" from Tradex!! You cant be totally sure what you get, but its your best bet right now. In my opinion. I think GB made a typo, they were always 249, and Wiemajack is 289 with higher shipping and taxes too.

and its a good way to get really good at cleaning a rifle when you shoot the corrosive that is..lol, mind you, i bought my sks almost 2 years ago now and have never even loaded a round into it, so maybe dont take my advice haha, they are nice guns though , cheap, cheap ammo, and c`mon, who doesnt need a rifle with a bayonet on it?.. i think everyone in canada should own one!..lol

Yes, actually, I thought everyone in Canada did own one, get out there and buy one, and Ian, shoot that SKS, don't neglect her!
