Hey Ardent, why are you trading Winchesters for Kimbers?

Just shoot it and don't worry about it. When I first got mine I was a initially confused by how fast and abrupt the recoil was, but after perception was adjusted it became evident that after the shot no arms were torn off, no bruises formed or blood shed. It starts out fast, comes straight back and stops just as quickly. It just doesn't have the weight to plaster you.

But the .338 can be loaded to a real variety of recoil levels. And the kimber pad is like a pillow compared to the stock tikka's (mine is long gone). I shot a 7mm mountain ascent with a lightweight scope once and I'd take it over the stock t3 in the same caliber and I believe it weighs almost 2lbs less.

I find 250 grains at around 2450 which is around the minimum load for most powders to be pretty easy on the shoulder.

225 grain hornady superformance factory ammo at 2840 from the muzzle = ouch, but not unreasonable

God only knows what kind of fire breathing rounds Dogleg was shooting from his kimber.

cept I can also say the stainless finish isn't up to the ruggedness of the rifle,,, but whats a few scratches :)

A 250 grain partition at 2800, 215 Sierra crowding 3000, 225 TSX right at 2900. Those last two aren't even close to maximum in the manuals but that smooth tight chambered 26" barrel likes to chip in some free horsepower. An interesting and enthusiastic recoiler is the 275 grain A-frame at 2650. You might want to pull your hat down a little snugger for that one in a Kimber ;).

I like the Montana fine and the Mountain Ascent has its own appeal mostly chamber options. I've heard stories of different stainless rifles not being equal in weather resistance and I could imagine that being a factor in your guiding area. What else is there? Reliability? Ease of field stripping? Simplicity of trigger or safety?

Depending on how im doing on any given day, those loads would either send me to the Chiropractor, or save me from goin.
 
Are you using H414 Dogleg?

I have no idea if getting the 225 grain velocity is possibly from my rifle- 24.3 inch barrel iirc.

I think my data is too conservative. Nosler lists much higher velocities with with H4831 from a 24 incher than I have been loading to. I will have to try their loads out.

Also I should switch to a spitzer if I want to chase those velocities I"m guessing.

I was told 250 grained round nose hornady softpoints expand reliably at lower end velocities so I have been shooting them from listed 2400-2600 and change.

This is also the kind of load that will get you kicked out of the H&H vs 9.3 debate club, so be careful.

Who knew that the new king came out in 1958?

I need to get my hands on some of these and some 300 grain accubonds and woodleighs for scientific purposes.

That's a valid point... I did PM to make sure he knew that if he felt this was out of line I would delete it.... And I thought twice about posting this thread for sure. An online community is a funny thing, when we acknowledge that we're connecting the dots between forums it can be awkward. I choose carefully what I post and I'm sure there are people on this website and others who have figured out quite a bit about me, but I did choose to share so the info is public domain.

Why I asked in a public way the question that came to mind while browsing the EE:

Today's gun writer/guide/outdoor adventurer is a person who shares a part of their life not just their opinions. I followed a link to Morrison Arms and read the blogs and articles on big bores and hunting. The openness about the new venture guiding in the Pacific North West along with caliber and rifles choices led me to believe Ardent wouldn't mind answering my question publicly. The huge thread on what to chamber his Satterlee custom mauser was a lot of fun and he's instigated more than a few good discussions lately. Hopefully this thread helps keep his name and guiding territory in people's minds so he's the first one they think of when they want to book a grizzly hunt.

I spend a lot of time on another forum dedicated to reloading and most of what I read about Kimbers was mediocre. I wanted to know why someone was clearly going in that direction.

I hope you enjoyed this thread, I sure did
