The land that he was hunting on is owned by a "war veteran" who now essentially sublets the land to an outfitter. According to the media they did not have quota for lion on that property. Dr Palmer is not being charged because he was acting in good faith and the authorities have determined that he was not aware that there was no quota for lion on the property. Unfortunately there are always unscrupulous operators, both at home and abroad, but it's hard to guard against being scammed. When I hunted in Zimbabwe I never once saw my hunting license nor the quota information so I had to take it on faith that the operator I hunted with was on the up and up. I had done my due diligence and was confident that I was in good hands. Dr Palmer, obviously, was not in good hands.
So what are you suggesting? No hunting at all because there might be cheaters? The areas I hunted in Africa, it was very clear to me that hunting was the only source of livelihood for the community. There is no "eco tourism" or the like in those areas nor will there be as it is too remote. The problem is most people simply don't understand African and make assumptions that it is like Canada, just poorer or something. The truth is, in some areas, if there was no hunting the poverty would be absolute. Before you get all high and mighty in your opinion, it is critical you understand the problem. Without the funds coming from hunting, most of the species in the area would be extinct. The activity of hunting actually ensures the populations continue. The local population have no time for lions, or other creatures if it interferes with their lives. They would gladly wipe out the lion and elephants as they make life difficult for the villages. There is no "goat" insurance if a lion kills the goat...just a lack of meat and milk. Elephants come in a destroy crops and trees. If the locals had their way, they would kill them all off for the sake of a goat and the corn crop.
That's unfair..... There are many reputable and trusted outfitters there......
I am not even convinced that the outfitter in question is not reputable..... From what I have read the whole outrage comes from the fact that "Cecil" was a "mascot"..... Well, making a mascot or pet out of a wild animal is never a good idea..... Let me assure you that, if Cecil was hungry he would tear your head off just as soon as look at you......
Way too many people take the media as gospel and this is a prime example....
I will add this..... There are so many in the shooting community that call us hunters "fudds" because we don't like the black stuff....
They point fingers at those of us that sell them down the river to try and save their black guns..... And I agree with them 100%..... We shouldn't judge each other for intended usage...... We should all enjoy our guns.....
But when I see a post like this from a black shooter in a hunting forum, it makes me question whether the fudds are an issue or if the paper punchers are a big part of the problem.....

Why not hunting buffalos for example , why exotic animals ? At the beginning of 20th century in Africa was 5M elephants , now just 300K left . Lions pop. drops from 200K to 20K its not fair , humans having precision tool to terminate them . There is bunch of others animals , hunt them , why exterminate exotics ? Thats my point hunt for food , not for fun .
I am not a big game Hunter. Probably wouldn't if I could afford it. But I have nothing against it. I wish I could of gone to the African Hunt conference, just to show my support for you guys. It is amazing what these animal rights nutters get away with. Making threats or blocking cars. Why aren't the police monitoring these groups and tell the protestors to stand back? I believe that some in the government encourage or at least turn a blind eye to these protestors and their tactics.
You miss the concept......if these animals had value for foreign hunters in the first place, they would have been highly valued and protected from poachers.....
Again, you are generalizing issues. Firstly in some places in Africa there are very few elephants while in others, the government is conducting a cull because the populations are damaging habitat. The lion populations you will note are extremely low in places where there is little or no hunting. The reason. The locals do not care about the species going extinct. They care about their goats and their livelihood. I can tell you 100% that the animals are used for food, not only for the hunters but for all those people employed by the outfitter. In the place I hunted, my tracking who was a local commented that if he did not get meat from the hunting outfitter, his family would have limited access to protein. Have a look at Kenya, a place with zero hunting. They are struggling to stop locals and poachers from destroying animals. Hunting in places like Zimbabwe fund almost in its entirety the park ranger/anti poacher programs.
Also, I think you assume that the African governments in the various states are incapable of managing wildlife. In most places, that is furthest from the truth. The reality is they fully recognize the importance of hunting and set quota and numbers that ensure a sustainable population.
Far too many people make sweeping generalizations about Africa without really understanding the facts.
The mere existence of mankind with eventually eradicate most big game species in Africa, along with other continents. Even without hunting.

Trebor gets to the root of the problem here.
It's so true, this is causing massive wildlife habitat destruction, creating city's full of citiots who have no clue about where their meat comes from etc. etc.
I did my part too in not contributing to the over population by having only two kids. (takes two to make two, right...)
The problem is that in many countries/cultures they breed like rabbits... How can you stop that?
Perhaps the globe needs a nasty virus that wipes out 75% of the human population.
