.338 Federal - lowdown ?

Savage has it in 6 of there guns lines this year... including their 111 Long Range Hunter, LOL. It really is a great little round; much like the .358 Win is as well. Last I checked, Federal was still making brass. Federal also has a number of the lines of ammo (Blue Box and Fusion) in this calibre as well. I also think we will continue to see more of it as it seems to be catching on with the AR crowd in the states from what I have read. I don't think it will die, in fact, it would be nice to see it re-ignite the medium bore market (338-06, 35 Whelen, 358 Win, 350 Rem Mag).

I checked several sites for brass and all I got was "out of stock", "not backorderable", "discontinued".

Does anyone know a contact at federal we could ask?

I love my Kimber Montana in .338 Fed. It's my dedicated elk rifle and has performed really well on them. Currently loaded with 185gr TSX but will be switching to the 210's for next year as I think this is a much better grain to be shooting out of a .338.

I had a hundred pieces of twice fired in my stash and bought another two bags a month ago from my LGS, when I started thinking about reaming out my Ultralight... I sold the last Fed two years ago and at that time there was no trouble ordering in brass.

I have a TIKKA T3 SS Lite SYN in 338 Federal - i changed the bolt stop to a long cartridge one and now use long cartridge mags so i can seat the bullets out for more powder space - Performance is GREAT ! i will not say what i get for FPS as i will be called for BS but i know ! Checked with 2 diff brands of Chronos ! it Shoots 160-225 gr-ers all good ! Its Prob the BEST all around mid cal short cartridge there is ! and Of course JMHO ! ;) RJ

You're right, they were. Seems that it lost out to economics though.

Hopefully with savage making those 5 or 6 rifles in it now it'll come back!!

Yeah, I just noticed they offer the Hog Hunter in .338 Fed. Would be a good cheap thrashing around the bush combination.

Ah... now you're talkin'. Never even thought about .338 Fed. in an AR10 format rifle !! Now that's awesome.

Great idea being able to set out further. I bet this round would really fly with a little extra powder.

Yes it Does ! RJ

Hummm... your longer action idea here is great remington jim. Made me wonder if this could still be done in a short action ?

Say swap out the blind mag with a larger one and a little in-letting? That way could still use a more compact rifle, the slightly longer rounds could still be cycled from mag and chambered like normal?

Think I recall someone talking about this in another thread about a different caliber.

Now that would be an awesome bush rig if it worked reliably. .338 Federal, rounds seated out further to take full advantage of it's capabilities in this caliber with nothing more than a slightly larger mag ?

Why shoot a .338 fed from a long action when you could be taking advantage of action length and shooting the .338 wm?
