6.5 calibers for big game hunting question

Sounds like I was out to lunch on the 264 mag.

The 264 Win Mag will outrun the 270 by about 150 fps for the heavier bullets if kept to 270 Win pressures. Of course many handloaders jack it up and live to tell of it. The fastest I've gone with my 6.5-300 Win Mag and 140 gr bullets was a bit faster than 3300 fps with a full case of US869 out of a 24" barrel. Faster powders exceeded that, but primer pockets were loose after two firings - time to back off.

My 264 WM would drive 140 Parts at 3300 fps from a 24" barrel (probably still will, haven't shot it in many years, too many toys).................I have never loaded for a 270 and never will, but if it don't say Weatherby on the head stamp I doubt you will see those kind of velocities...........

No you won't see those velocities from the .270 win.

My experience with .270's is about as follows

130's - 3200 fps
140's - 3100
150's - 3000+

Which is not handloaded 264 win mag, but 150's at an actual 3000+ is right on par with a fair bit of factory 7mm rem mag and lots of guys 7mm rem mag handloads. Again, not full powered handloads, but what lots of guys are actually using.

Back to the 6.5 thing...I like 6.5's, but 600 yards on moose makes me uneasy. And yes, I have seen the videos of girls shooting elk at 800 yards with a .243 etc.
