Hello I'm looking to try some casting....seems like Metalex in Van is a good place to get some clean alloy. Has anyone ordered and shipped from there? Im in the Okanagan, looking to find a shipper to bring a small order up...any suggestions? Also, I asked them if they could supply 20-1 lead to tin...they said no. So what's my best bet? Get pure and find a bit of tin to add to it? Or get 1-2% Antimony and just go with that? It will be for BP loads.. thanks

Wheel weights are ready available in the Okanagan. The amount of soft lead stick-on weights in the buckets I've picked up has been generous. I'm perhaps above 50lbs of those beautiful soft little buggers and I have only picked up 3 partially full 5 gal. pails

That's interesting, I have a few tire shops in town, I should ask around....but really, I dont intend to cast a whole lot, so I was just trying to keep it simple and have a bit of pure, clean lead and some clean tin to mix in

For BP go for as pure Pb as you can.
Usually the stick on lead ones are more pure than the clip wheel weights.
I also get my dentist to give me all the lead foils from x-rays, it is very pure.

Are you shooting muzzleloaders or BP cartridge rifle?

For muzzleloaders you want pure lead with a BHn of 5.

For BPCR you want something that is harder like 20-1 which has a BHN of about 8.

Wheel weights will almost double that as far as hardness goes.

I have bought from Metalex on No. 5 Road in Richmond.

I bought a 70 pound ingot of pure lead at about $1.15 per pound a few years ago.

Pure lead allows you to add what you need to get the mix or hardness required.

I'm wanting to shoot BPCR, so that's why I'm looking for the 20-1......they are quoting me 1.30/lb for pure, so not terrible, but the tin is expensive, 20/lb. by the time I ship it here, it will be about 3.20/lb delivered but that is for several hundred pounds....seeing as I'm just starting out in this game, that might be a bit stupid....I'm going down to the states to pick an item up from a shipping place, looks like I could get 50lb of 20-1 shipped to there for about the same rate, even with the dollar being low. If I end up really liking it, then I can order up a skid of lead from Vancouver. I'll hunt down some WW here locally here as well, but I'd rather start with good clean alloy for my first foray into casting and keep my problems to a minimum

SO just a update, I just got back from Van, stopped by Metalex the other morning, pretty easy place to find. Bought me a ingot of pure lead and one of 4% antimony. I think I paid 1.31 for the pure and 1.35 for the 4%. As i was leaving Van today, I stopped at Purity Alloy and got a few pounds of pure tin, 20$ /lb. I had to order that a few days in advance. I should be set now for a few years, unless this casting thing gets out of control...which could happen

Ya, Purity Alloys has just quoted me for 20-1 as well.....

I just received 70 pounds of Lyman #2 from purity, fast service to manitoba, and they were heavy on the order,so that was a bonus.I used roto metals in the states before but the dollar and shipping is high.
Puritys alloy is very clean.

I have purchased 6 60lb ingots from them in the last couple of years 2%tin 6%antimony around a 1.70 lb seems to cast really well no leading issues in my .45 acp or .357 or gas checked .45 in my s&w 460xvr .45acp runs about .6 per boolit no scrounging no casting into ingots just bust into chunks and cast boolits.
