Savage vs. Marlin, looking for feedback please.

My first savage had some fitment and finishing issues. Some screws were mm's too short so the receiver was loose in the stock, the wood around the holes into which you would screw the action screws sort of crumbled away, and this was just after the first disassembly. I also had some issues with the company I purchased the gun from getting it warrantied, all in all it was just a bad experience. It was my first gun purchase and it was just full of noob mistakes as well.

My second Savage was a 93r17 TR, it was a great gun but I purchased my CZ varmint tacticool shortly after and it became redundant. Had I just bought a 455 from the get go, I could have had the multiple calibers and the ability to mix and match stock styles and so on from the beginning. It would have been a better platform to grow on.

Even though my first savage was somewhat of a disaster I do not believe that savage makes a poor product, and certainly a few years back I felt that the CZs and Savages were a little closer in price point. The difference between the 93r17 TR and a 455 at the time was like a few dollars. The CAD being so low compared to the USD is not doing any of us favours.
 
Ah, yeah. Sounds like you had some problems. Can't blame you for being upset with that! The barrel changes on the 455 are a neat feature for sure and would definitely give some extra versatility.
 
Didn't get pics as we were in a rush to leave the range but I sighted it in at 30yrds and was shooting ragged holes with the cheapie whinchester .22 ammo. Hitting my steel out at 50 & 80 yrds was easy peazy. Next time out I'll take some pics and really see which ammo it likes the best, put some different velocity Winchester, cci, blazer and federal match ammo through it. Liked the Winchester the best, had a couple fte on some blazer and cci standards. Shoots great, can't wait to get it out again. I forgot how fun a .22 bolt is.

Congrats on the buy butcherbill it looks nice. Ive never held one but ive been doing some research on marlin .22's and the more i read, the more i want one. Ive always been a 10/22 guy but i think the 795 is going to be in the safe soon as my open sight semi auto.

Haha, I hoped it was going to do well with the cheap stuff. The wife and I had a good time, she shot her new 12.5" grizzly I got her for her birthday and I shot my birthday .22 & put some rounds through the sks.

Good times were had by both, I put a few rounds through a fellow range members sig p226. Great gun, might have to add a new restricted to the list.

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it. Shooting .22 is a lot of fun.
 
I prefer the savage. I use a mark 2 FV in both 22 Lr and 17 mach 2. Love them
All the new marlins I've looked at have had the sights canted. Some rifles the rear to the right and the front sight to the left. It's the reason I haven't bought a 795 and a papoose yet

The savage mark2 f or g will work if you want irons and wood or plastic
 
I purchased a Marlin XT-22 last January and have shot 4500 rounds of mostly bulk ammo ( Winchester M-22, Remington Golden Bullet bulk bucket ) and I can count on 1 hand the number of fail to fire and fail to eject. Started shooting at 25yrd and now I'm up to 300yrds, any problem with accuracy is defiantly with me. I have a Nikon Rimfire P150 scope on it. Great rifle.

My buddy purchased a Savage Mark II same results. But when I took the rifle apart when it was new and we were installing the same scope, I found the quality of the rifle just not the same as the Marlin. Saying that, there has been no issues with the rifle and we are both plinking at 300yrds.
