Brand-new out of the box and feeding is just frustrating. LH .223, using factory ammo, magazine properly "clicked" in place. Bolt is moved forward, bolt face properly engages cartridge base and moves it forward. Problem is, front of cartridge does not rise that much during the forward motion. Bullet almost always comes in contact with the bottom metal of the chamber face, roughly at the six-o'clock spot. Once it touches the face it's game- over, bolt is jammed and stops moving, must remove mag and round and try again. Happens about 80% of the time, needless to say it's quite irritating.

I think that the magazine is to blame, perhaps the feed lips are bent too much and don't allow the front of the cartridge to cant up enough to center it to the face. The interwebz says that the mag spring might also be placed backwards. Either way, I don't want to fiddle with it until someone with more experience can give me some advice. Hopefully it's an easy fix, not really keen on packaging a brand new rifle, sending it in for repairs and waiting weeks for it to be returned.

My buddy picked up a LH Axis, not only is the trigger a brick hahaha but he got 2 mags. One feeds fine, one doesn't feed well or fit... It is constantly falling out... Its just the mag... I have the same issues with my model 11 trophy hunter XP.. 2 mags work great one is garbage... Just typical savage fit and finish... lol They are getting like norinco but way more accurate rifles ! lol

Call Grech outdoors in Mount Forest (authorized cdn repair centre) they may be able to suggest a fix or perhaps check savage shooters forum for all things savage. The axis has its own subheading if there is a fix it will be there.

Call savage and they will more then likely send you another mag free of charge. I broke a part of my savage, my own fault, called them up explained and they sent me next part no charge to me at all. I know of others who have had the same service from them. Worth a try

try opening up the feed lips of the mag using some needle nose pliers. Likely this will correct the problem. No big issue to this adjustment. trial and error as the spring steel has a lot of flex. hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. I contacted Savage this morning, they forwarded me to Grech who in turn suggested I send the complete rifle to them. Will fiddle with the feed lips and try it out.

The spring in my mag would get stuck after the first two rounds were shot the next she'll would not be pushed up to the top of the mag. Had to get inside and clean it up real good .works great now. Yoy can pick up a new mag at your local CT store. Dutch

If you are going to return the rifle for service I wouldn't do anything to the magazine. Just leaves the repair depot an out to blame the problem on you. The Axis is a budget priced rifle and I see a lot of quality and function issues with them. You can only build a rifle so cheap then something has to give in my opinion.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Just got off the phone with Savage CS, they were very helpful and are shipping me a new magazine, hopefully this will solve the problem.

Well, I got the new magazine from Savage today and it seemed to fix the problem! Cycled 9 rounds and only one gave me an issue, most likely because I cycled that one a little slowly. Thinking of buffing up the feed ramp lightly with some emery cloth and G96, feels just a little too rough.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice, my kudos to Savage CS for looking after my issue in a timely fashion.
